Wild Sign Mats Zuccarello, Marcus Foligno To Extensions

Minnesota Wild signed forwards Mats Zuccarello and Marcus Foligno to contract extensions on Friday.

Zuccarello signed a two-year, $8.25 million contract extension on Friday that will keep him with the team through the 2025-26 season.

Foligno followed later in the day by signing a four-year extension worth $16 million.

Senators Name Steve Staios President Of Hockey Operations

The Ottawa Senators appointed Steve Staios as president of hockey operations on Friday.

Earlier on Friday morning, Staios resigned from his position as special adviser to hockey operations with the Edmonton Oilers.

"I am so excited that Steve is joining me in Ottawa to lead our hockey operations," Senators new owner Michael Andlauer in a news release. "I have worked with Steve for many years and know first-hand that he will strengthen our team with his hockey acumen, attention to detail, commitment to excellence and enthusiasm for the game and its players. In hockey you can never accumulate too much talent. Having Steve and Pierre (Dorion, general manager) leading our hockey department gives us a formidable team."

Flames Sign New Captain Mikael Backlund To Two-Year Extension

Two of the bigger questions facing the Calgary Flames were answered Wednesday when they signed center Mikael Backlund to a two-year extension while also naming him their captain.

Re-signing Backlund, 34, to a two-year deal worth $4.5 million annually resolved one of the most prominent issues facing the team entering training camp.

"This is a very special day for my family and I," said Backlund, the 24th overall pick in the 2007 NHL draft.

The New Jersey Devils signed free agent goaltender Keith Kinkaid to a one-year, two-way contract.

The deal announced Wednesday is worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $350,000 in the AHL.

Kinkaid, 34, played parts of six seasons with the Devils to begin his career from 2013 to '19.

The Tampa Bay Lightning terminated the contract of veteran forward Josh Archibald on Saturday after the offseason acquisition told the team he was taking time off from hockey.

The Lightning signed free agent Tyler Motte to replace him on a one-year, $800,000 deal.

"I was informed by Josh's agent, and by Josh himself in a subsequent conversation, that he was not planning on playing hockey for the time being and that he would not be reporting to training camp," Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois said. "Consequently, Josh was placed on unconditional waivers ... for the purpose of terminating his contract."

The Ottawa Senators added to their list of young cornerstones on long-term deals Wednesday by signing defenseman Jake Sanderson to an eight-year contract worth $8.05 million annually.

Sanderson, who was named to the NHL All-Rookie team in June, was entering the final year of his entry-level contract. The 21-year-old, who was the fifth pick of the 2020 NHL draft, left the University of North Dakota after his sophomore season and became one of the Senators' more consistent players in his rookie campaign this past season.
