Zdeno Chara is leaving the Boston Bruins after 14 seasons and signing a one-year free-agent contract with the Washington Capitals.

Chara, 43, will make $795,000 against the salary cap with Washington. He said the Bruins decided to go in a different direction, and the unrestricted free agent was not in their plans.

General Manager Bill Armstrong announced today that the Coyotes have signed forward Derick Brassard to a one-year contract. As per Club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

“We are very pleased to welcome Derick to our Pack,” said Armstrong. “Derick is an experienced, skilled forward who can play center or wing and contribute offensively. He is also very effective in the face-off circle. We look forward to having him in our lineup this season.”

The 33-year-old Brassard registered 10-22-32 and 16 penalty minutes (PIM) in 66 games with the Islanders in 2019-20.

The LA Kings signed forward Andreas Athanasiou to a one-year contract worth $1.2 million, according to Vice President and General Manager Rob Blake.

Athanasiou split last season between the Detroit Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers. The 26-year-old forward started the season with the Red Wings, posting 24 points in 46 games. He was traded at the deadline to the Oilers where he posted two points in nine games before the season was cut short. He went scoreless in four games with Edmonton during the postseason.

The Montreal Canadiens have signed Corey Perry to a one-year, $750,000 deal, the team announced Monday.

The 35-year-old forward spent last season with the Dallas Stars and tallied five goals and 16 assists in 57 regular season games.

Ilya Kovalchuk is returning to Russia's Kontinental Hockey League after signing a two-year contract with Avangard Omsk, the league announced Saturday.

Kovalchuk, 37, played for three NHL teams during the 2019-20 season. He started the campaign with the Los Angeles Kings before they waived him and his $18.25 million contract in December. He landed with the Montreal Canadiens in January on a veteran's league minimum of $700,000.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have re-signed forward Anthony Cirelli to a three-year, $14.4 million contract, general manager Julien BriseBois announced Thursday.

Goalie Ryan Miller is returning to the Anaheim Ducks with a one-year, $1 million contract.

The Ducks announced the deal Wednesday night to re-sign the 40-year-old Miller, who will be back for his fourth season as John Gibson's backup.

The New Jersey Devils have re-signed restricted free-agent goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to a three-year, $8.4 million contract. General manager Tom Fitzgerald announced the deal for the Devils' No. 1 goaltender.

The Predators have signed forward Mikael Granlund to a one-year, $3.75 million contract, bringing him back to the team that traded for him in February 2019.

Granlund had 30 points last season with the Predators.
