Ducks Sign McCue To Entry-Level Deal

The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed left wing Matt McCue to a three-year entry-level contract. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed. McCue is scheduled to report to the Iowa Chops, Anaheim?s primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). McCue, 20 (7/5/88), appeared in 34 games between the Brandon Wheat Kings and Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League (WHL) this season. He scored 5-12=17 points with a +10 rating and 101 PIM between the two teams, setting career highs in assists and points while matching a personal best in goals. Acquired by Medicine Hat on Oct. 16, McCue led the Tigers in plus/minus (+16) and PIM (66). A native of Cochrane, Alberta, McCue played the 2007-08 campaign with Brandon and Chilliwack (WHL), posting 0-11=11 points with 195 PIM in 70 games. McCue, who was acquired by the Wheat Kings at the 2007-08 WHL Trade deadline, finished seventh among WHL leaders in penalty minutes. He appeared in all six of Brandon?s playoff games in 2008, scoring the overtime winner in Game 5 of the WHL Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against Lethbridge. The 6-5, 218-pound McCue played six WHL seasons as a defenseman with Spokane (2003-07), Chilliwack (2006-08), Brandon (2007-09) and Medicine Hat (2008-09). In 220 career WHL games, McCue scored 14-41=55 points with 531 PIM.

Penguins' Talbot Signs Two-Year Extension

The Penguins have signed forward Maxime Talbot to a two-year contract extension that averages $1.05 million per season. "It was very friendly, very comfortable," agent Pat Brisson said. "It wasn't rushed." Talbot claims that he only thought of staying with Pittsburgh. "There's no way I was thinking about leaving or anything like that," said Talbot, who is earning $700,000 this season. "There's no better place to play hockey than Pittsburgh. With the exciting young team we have and the success we had last year, what we've achieved and what everybody expects us to achieve, it's so fun to be part of this hockey team and to be part of this town."

Sundin Picks Canucks Over Rangers

Mats Sundin has signed with the Vancouver Canucks for the remainder of the season. "He's real happy to have made a decision," Sundin's agent J.P. Barry said Thursday evening. "He's excited with the opportunity that the Canucks will offer him." Barry and Canucks GM Mike Gillis were still working out the final financial details of the deal but it's expected it will be worth somewhere around $10 million, pro-rated, for one season. Sundin was also considering the New York Rangers.

Capitals Turn Web Site Producer Into Goalie

The Capitals have signed their 6-foot-7 web site producer to dress for Friday night's game against the Senators because of injuries. Brett Leonhardt, who played Division III hockey in college, signed an amateur tryout contract before the game.

Ducks Sign Tangradi To Entry-Level Contract

The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed left wing Eric Tangradi to a three-year entry-level contract. Per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Tangradi, 19 (2/10/89), has appeared in 32 contests with the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) this season, collecting 20-26=46 points with 41 penalty minutes (PIM). Playing in his third season with the club and his first as team captain, the 6-3, 220-pound winger currently leads the Bulls and ranks fourth in the OHL in scoring. He is currently riding a 10-game point streak (9-10=19) dating back to Nov. 15 at Ottawa, which also includes a five-point effort (2-3=5) on Nov. 19 vs. Niagara. Tangradi was named the Boston Pizza OHL Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 23, collecting 4-5=9 points with a +6 rating in three games. He has registered at least one point in 24-of-32 games this season, helping the Bulls maintain first place in the OHL?s Eastern Conference. On Dec. 3, Tangradi was named to the U.S. National Junior Team competing at the 2009 World Junior Championship beginning on Dec. 26 in Ottawa, Ontario.

Leafs Name Nonis VP Of Hockey Operations

Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Saturday that David Nonis has been named senior vice president of hockey operations. Nonis, 42, most recently was the Anaheim Ducks? senior advisor of hockey operations and held that position since June 20, 2008. For the past four years he was senior vice president and general manager of the Vancouver Canucks. He joined the Canucks in 1998 as senior vice president, director of hockey operations after serving four seasons as the National Hockey League?s manager of hockey operations. With the NHL, Nonis helped craft the 1994 Collective Bargaining Agreement and worked with the league?s arbitration team, assisting clubs in preparing for arbitration, researching salaries and interpreting contract language. ?David Nonis brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our hockey staff,? said Burke. ?We have successfully worked together in the past, and he has a deep understanding of contractual, legal and financial matters as well as scouting and roster management. He?ll be an asset to our organization in several areas.? A native of Burnaby, British Columbia, Nonis played hockey for the University of Maine where he served as captain for two seasons, leading his team to back-to-back NCAA championship tournaments and graduating with a B.A. in 1988. He played one season professionally in Denmark before returning to Maine in 1989 to serve on the coaching staff of his alma mater. He earned his M.B.A. from Maine in 1990 before joining the Vancouver Canucks staff that year working with corporate contracts, computer scouting and team services. Nonis became the Canucks? chief negotiator of player contracts and assumed responsibility for Vancouver?s minor league affiliate agreement with the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League. He directed all areas of the Canucks? hockey operations department before being tapped as the ninth, and youngest-ever, general manager of the club May 6, 2004.
