Former NHL goaltender Craig Anderson has an unusual new job with his former team, the Buffalo Sabres.

Anderson, who played his last game with the Sabres in April after 20 seasons in the NHL, has been hired as a "hockey liaison" by the organization. The part-time role doesn't make him a coach or an executive. According to the Sabres, Anderson will be "a trusted voice in the Sabres' locker room, providing insight, guidance, and support" to the players and coaching staff.

Hall of Fame forward Daniel Alfredsson rejoined the Ottawa Senators in a coaching and player development role.

Team president Steve Staios announced the news Friday involving Alfredsson, who was out on the ice for the morning skate.

Alfredsson, 50, told reporters he doesn't yet have an official job title but he will be around "quite a bit," per TSN.

One of the major concerns facing the Colorado Avalanche this season was answered within a matter of days with the team announcing Friday that it had re-signed defenseman Devon Toews to a seven-year contract.

Finding a new deal for Toews, who will earn $7.25 million annually starting next season, was one of the key items facing the Avalanche with the 29-year-old entering the final year of his contract.

An already important week for the Buffalo Sabres' long-term plans became even more paramount Wednesday with the club announcing they signed defenseman Owen Power to a seven-year extension.

Signing Power, 20, to a seven-year deal worth $8.35 million annually comes two days after the club announced they signed fellow defenseman Rasmus Dahlin to an eight-year pact worth $11 million annually. Both the Dahlin and Power contracts would start at the beginning of the 2024-25 season.

The New Jersey Devils have signed head coach Lindy Ruff to a multiyear contract extension after he led them to their first playoff series win since 2012, it was announced Wednesday.

Ruff, 63, was signed through the 2023-24 season. Terms of the new deal were not disclosed.

"This young, exciting team has developed and thrived under Lindy's stewardship since he joined the Devils' organization," Devils managing partner David Blitzer said in a statement. "Lindy is one of the winningest coaches in NHL history and his extension is well deserved. I'm looking forward to continued team success this upcoming season and beyond."

Forward Noah Gregor signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

Gregor, 25, had joined the Maple Leafs on a professional tryout prior to training camp.

The Winnipeg Jets announced Monday that franchise cornerstones Mark Scheifele and Connor Hellebuyck signed identical seven-year contract extensions carrying an average annual value of $8.5 million.

Scheifele and Hellebuyck are into the final seasons of their previous deals and were set to become unrestricted free agents July 1.

Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin's emergence as a team leader and one of the NHL's top offensive blue-line threats last season earned him an eight-year, $88 million contract extension on Monday.

Minnesota Wild forward Ryan Hartman signed a three-year, $12 million contract extension Saturday that runs through the 2026-27 season.

Hartman, 29, is entering his fifth season with the Wild. In 2022-23, he tallied 37 points (15 goals, 22 assists) in 59 games. 

The Anaheim Ducks signed leading scorer Trevor Zegras to a three-year deal on Monday, ending a contract stalemate a week before the season begins. The average annual salary on Zegras' new contract id $5.75 million, sources told ESPN.

Zegras, 22, led the Ducks in scoring last season with 23 goals and 65 points in 81 games.
