Devils, Will Butcher Agree To Two-Year, $1.85M Deal

The New Jersey Devils continued stockpiling young talent this offseason by landing college hockey's top player, Will Butcher.

The University of Denver defenseman agreed to a two-year, $1.85 million contract with New Jersey on Sunday after spending much of the past two weeks meeting with nearly a dozen NHL teams.

Jets Sign Matt Hendricks To One-Year Deal

The Winnipeg Jets signed center Matt Hendricks to a one-year, $700,000 contract Saturday.

The 36-year-old former St. Cloud State player spent the last four seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, finishing with four goals and three assists in 42 games last season with a 56.9 percent faceoff winning percentage.

He has 49 goals and 51 assists in 521 career games with Colorado, Washington, Nashville and Edmonton.

Devils Sign Drew Stafford To One-Year Deal

The Devils have signed veteran winger Drew Stafford to a one-year deal worth $800,000.

General manager Ray Shero announced the contract Friday, less than a month before the start of training camp.

Stafford, 31, had eight goals and 13 assists last season with Winnipeg and Boston. The Jets traded him to the Bruins at the deadline and had two goals in six playoff games.

Ducks Sign Francois Beauchemin

The Anaheim Ducks have signed Francois Beauchemin.

Beauchemin was a member of their Stanley Cup championship team in 2007.

RDS reported the contract is worth $1 million with up to $500,000 in performance bonuses.

Avalanche Sign Dominic Toninato

The Colorado Avalanche have signed forward Dominic Toninato to a two-year, entry-level contract through the 2018-19 season. Toninato became a college free agent on Aug. 15.

Toninato, 23, wrapped up a four-year career with Minnesota Duluth in 2016-17, serving as team captain during his senior season. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound center registered 29 points (16g/13a) in 42 games and finished with a team-high +25 plus/minus rating, helping the Bulldogs capture their first-ever National Collegiate Hockey Conference title and advancing to the NCAA Frozen Four championship game. He was named to the NCHC All-Tournament Team alongside current Avalanche forward Tyson Jost and named the league’s best defensive forward, finishing with 29 blocked shots.

In 151 career games with Minnesota Duluth, Toninato accumulated 91 points (54g/37a) and finished with a +43 plus/minus rating.

“We are excited to announce that Dominic has decided to sign with our organization,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President / General Manager Joe Sakic. “He is a big, responsible two-way center and represents a solid prospect for the future of our team.”

Tony Granato, former coach of the Avalanche and the current coach at Wisconsin, has been tapped to coach the U.S. men's team for the 2018 Olympics, a source told ESPN's John Buccigross.

Granato, 53, left a job as an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings to take the Wisconsin position in March 2016. 

Former NHL veteran Chris Chelios, Penguins executive Scott Young and Yale coach Keith Allain have been hired as assistant coaches, the source told ESPN's Buccigross.
