After skating at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday morning, Patrick Kane would have loved to play his first game for the Detroit Red Wings at night against the New York Rangers.

Six months removed from an invasive operation only two other NHL players have come back from, though, Kane will give his surgically repaired right hip a little more time.

Following an internal investigation, the Chicago Blackhawks said Tuesday they have placed veteran winger Corey Perry on unconditional waivers for the purposes of terminating his contract.

Perry had initially taken a leave of absence from the team. Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson told reporters Saturday that the decision to send Perry away from the team was made by management. Perry's agent, Pat Morris, said in a statement that same day that it was Perry's decision to leave the Blackhawks.

Patrick Kane is signing a one-year, $2.75 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

Kane, who spent the first 16 years of his NHL career with the Chicago Blackhawks before a trade to the New York Rangers last spring, is six months out from hip resurfacing surgery. The nine-time All-Star has met with a handful of teams over the past month, including his hometown Buffalo Sabres, the Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins.

The NHL All-Star Weekend is returning to its roots -- and bringing back an old favorite.

When the showcase lands in Toronto this February, it'll be as an expanded three-day event with NHL All-Star Thursday added ahead of the usual Friday skills competition and Saturday All-Star Game. The highlight of its Thursday festivities will be the league's first All-Star player draft in nearly a decade, with four All-Star captains -- and their celebrity captain partners -- drafting teams for Saturday's contest live in front of fans at Scotiabank Arena.

The Minnesota Wild on Monday fired coach Dean Evason after a disastrous start to their season.

John Hynes, who previously coached the Nashville Predators and the New Jersey Devils, will take over as coach, an NHL source confirmed to ESPN.

New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba on Saturday was fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the NHL's collective bargaining agreement, for a high-sticking infraction on Boston Bruins forward Trent Frederic.

The penalty occurred earlier in the day, during New York's 7-4 victory in a matchup of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference.

New York Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech has been placed on long-term injured reserve Saturday, one day after he sustained an upper-body injury in a game against the Ottawa Senators.

Pelech was injured on his second shift of the first period and did not return to the contest.

He will be required to miss at least 10 games and 24 calendar days after being placed on long-term injured reserve.

Also on Saturday, the Islanders placed rugged forward Matt Martin on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. The move is retroactive to Nov. 15.

The Chicago Blackhawks said veteran forward Corey Perry will be away from the team for "the foreseeable future."

Perry, 38, hasn't played in Chicago's past two games and didn't practice with the Blackhawks this week.

"He's away from the team and will remain so for the foreseeable future," GM Kyle Davidson said Saturday. "We're unable to provide any update on that front."

The decision to send Perry away from the team was made by management, Davidson said.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped all 32 shots he faced, Dylan Samberg and Mason Appleton each had two assists and the Winnipeg Jets shut out the Florida Panthers 3-0 on Friday night.

Nino Niederreiter, Nikolaj Ehlers and Adam Lowry scored for the Jets in coach Rick Bowness' return from personal leave. Winnipeg is 12-5-2 on the season and went 9-2-2 under interim coach Scott Arniel while Bowness was away.

Minnesota Wild goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury wore a custom Native American Heritage Night mask in warmups Friday despite the NHL having forbidden him from doing so because it violated league policy on players wearing specialty equipment on theme nights.

Fleury wanted to honor his wife, Véronique, who is Native Canadian, by wearing a specially designed mask by artist Cole Redhorse Taylor.
