Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews (wrist) won't play in this weekend's NHL All-Star Game, but he will attend the event in St. Louis, the team announced Wednesday. Matthews, 22, is day-to-day while he gets treatment for an ongoing wrist issue, Toronto said.

Washington's Alex Ovechkin, Boston's David Pastrnak, Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon and Edmonton's Connor McDavid were voted NHL All-Star captains.
Ovechkin was voted by fans to captain the Metropolitan Division, Pastrnak the Atlantic, MacKinnon the Central and McDavid the Pacific. McDavid was voted into All-Star Weekend for a fourth season in a row and Ovechkin a third in a row.

The four coaches for this month's NHL All-Star Game will be Paul Maurice of Winnipeg, Todd Reirden of Washington, Jon Cooper of Tampa Bay and Bill Peters of Calgary.
Each of the teams is a division leader -- Winnipeg (Central), Washington (Metropolitan), Tampa Bay (Atlantic) and Calgary (Pacific).
The NHL All-Star Weekend is Jan. 25-26 in San Jose, California.
Alex Ovechkin, who was named the captain of the Metropolitan Division team for the All-Star Game on Jan. 26, has informed the NHL that he will skip the festivities to rest for the second half of the season.
The Capitals captain leads the league with 29 goals.
"My body needs a rest," he said after practice on Wednesday.
Deciding to skip the game means that Ovechkin will have to also sit out the game before or game after the contest, per NHL rules.
As criticism of the NHL coach's challenge grows louder around the league, commissioner Gary Bettman wants a little less scrutiny and a little more common sense in these reviews.

Lightning star Steven Stamkos will serve as captain of the Atlantic Division team in the NHL All-Star 3-on-3 tournament this month in Tampa, Florida.
