Shea Weber Won't Play For Canadiens Next Season, Career Could Be Over

Jul 22, 2021 2:24 PM

Shea Weber will not play for the Montreal Canadiens next season and the defenseman's NHL career could be over.

Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said Weber is dealing with multiple injuries.

"I was amazed how he played," Bergevin said Thursday. "He was one of our top-minute defensemen throughout the whole playoffs all the way to the Stanley Cup Final. I personally wasn't aware [of the severity of his injuries], and from what I've gathered from the information, I don't think anybody was really aware of it. I think we're all aware of their pain and what he was going through every day, but to that degree we didn't know. Shea, as you all know, is a man of few words and sharing or complaining about his body is not one thing that he does so I was very surprised.

"He won't be back next season, and probably won't be back for his career."

Canadiens Scratch Jesperi Kotkaniemi; Alex Killorn Game-Time Decision

Jul 5, 2021 2:58 PM

The Montreal Canadiens are scrambling their lines and their lineup for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, facing a potential sweep at the hands of the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday night.

Opting for a faster lineup, the Canadiens are scratching 20-year-old forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi, who has eight points in 19 playoff games, in favor of forward Jake Evans, making his first appearance since Game 1. Montreal is also sitting defensemen Jon Merrill and Erik Gustafsson in favor of Brett Kulak and rookie Alexander Romanov, neither of whom have seen action since June 14 in Game 1 of the third round against Vegas.

Meanwhile, the Lightning will go with the same lineup they had in their Game 3 win unless forward Alex Killorn can return from a foot injury. Coach Jon Cooper called him a game-time decision who is "inching closer" to a return after injuring his foot in Game 1.

The Islanders won the game, 3-2 in overtime, to force Game 7 on Friday night in Tampa, Florida.

"It sucks to lose Kuch like that early," Lightning captain Steven Stamkos said of Kucherov, who leads all playoff scorers with 27 points in 17 games. "Guys battled. We played short the rest of the game."
