Carl Hagelin Retires From NHL Due To Eye Injury

Carl Hagelin has decided to retire from the NHL at age 35, citing an eye injury that has kept him out of game action for nearly a year and a half.

Hagelin has not played since taking an errant stick to his left eye during Washington Capitals practice on March 1, 2022. He underwent surgery, and the team immediately deemed it a serious injury with concern about Hagelin's quality of life outside hockey.

The Hurricanes have a press event scheduled for Wednesday morning. Among those in attendance will be WHL commissioner Ron Robison and Doug Paisley, the president of the team's board of directors.

The team declined to comment on Tuesday night.

The new Professional Women's Hockey League was officially revealed Tuesday with six inaugural franchises and a 24-game regular season that begins in January 2024.

The PWHL will feature three teams in the U.S. and three teams in Canada. The American franchises are located in Boston, Minneapolis-St. Paul and the New York City area, which could include Connecticut and New Jersey. The Canadian franchises are located in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario.

Gagner, 34, was a first-round pick (sixth overall) by Edmonton in 2007 and played with the Oilers from 2007-14 and 2019-20.

Sutter, also 34, was a first-round pick in the same 2007 draft, going 11th overall to the Carolina Hurricanes.
