Carl Hagelin has decided to retire from the NHL at age 35, citing an eye injury that has kept him out of game action for nearly a year and a half.

Hagelin has not played since taking an errant stick to his left eye during Washington Capitals practice on March 1, 2022. He underwent surgery, and the team immediately deemed it a serious injury with concern about Hagelin's quality of life outside hockey.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are sticking with head coach Sheldon Keefe.

The Maple Leafs announced a multiyear contract extension for their bench boss Wednesday, putting to rest conversation about whether Keefe would remain with Toronto under new general manager Brad Treliving.

Bill Peters, who resigned in disgrace from the Calgary Flames in 2019, will be announced as the new head coach of the Western Hockey League's Lethbridge Hurricanes, multiple sources told ESPN, confirming reports.

The Hurricanes have a press event scheduled for Wednesday morning. Among those in attendance will be WHL commissioner Ron Robison and Doug Paisley, the president of the team's board of directors.

The team declined to comment on Tuesday night.

The new Professional Women's Hockey League was officially revealed Tuesday with six inaugural franchises and a 24-game regular season that begins in January 2024.

The PWHL will feature three teams in the U.S. and three teams in Canada. The American franchises are located in Boston, Minneapolis-St. Paul and the New York City area, which could include Connecticut and New Jersey. The Canadian franchises are located in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario.

The Edmonton Oilers signed veteran forwards Sam Gagner and Brandon Sutter to professional tryout agreements on Monday.

Gagner, 34, was a first-round pick (sixth overall) by Edmonton in 2007 and played with the Oilers from 2007-14 and 2019-20.

Sutter, also 34, was a first-round pick in the same 2007 draft, going 11th overall to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The NFL's Buffalo Bills and the NHL's Buffalo Sabres will operate as separate entities after the teams' owner, Terry Pegula, dissolved their parent company on Monday.

The announcement to dissolve Pegula Sports and Entertainment is being referred to as one "allowing each respective organization to focus singularly on their efforts." The decision marks the next step in a management restructuring Pegula began in July, when he fired executive vice president and COO Ron Raccuia, who oversaw the operations of both franchises.

The Washington Capitals have promoted Brian MacLellan to president of hockey operations to go along with his general manager duties.

MacLellan has been the team's GM since 2014 and previously held the title of vice president. The move announced Monday comes with longtime president Dick Patrick being appointed chairman of the Capitals and son Chris getting promoted to associate GM.

The New York Rangers have hired Hockey Hall of Famer Angela Ruggiero as a hockey operations adviser, it was announced Friday.

Ruggiero, 43, won four Olympic medals as a defenseman for the U.S. She helped the country win gold at the 1998 Games in Nagano -- the first Olympics with women's hockey -- followed by silver in 2002 and 2010 and bronze in 2006.

Restricted free agent defenseman Evan Bouchard signed a two-year, $7.8 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday.

His three-year, $4.975 million entry-level contract concluded at the end of last season.

The New York Rangers have re-signed Alexis Lafreniere, inking the young winger to a two-year contract worth $4.65 million.

Lafreniere will count just over $2.3 million against the salary cap each of the next two seasons as part of the deal completed Wednesday.
