After years as one of the NHL's best bargains, defenseman Roman Josi is getting a significant raise with the Nashville Predators.

On Tuesday, the team announced an eight-year contract extension for Josi, 29, that will average $9.059 million per season annually against the salary cap. The contract begins in the 2020-21 season, when Josi would be the third-highest-paid defenseman in the NHL on average behind Erik Karlsson of the San Jose Sharks ($11.5 million) and Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings ($11 million).

Devante Smith-Pelly, who scored seven goals during the Washington Capitals' Stanley Cup-winning run in 2018, has signed a contract to play in the KHL.

The Kunlun Red Star, which play in China, announced they had signed the 27-year-old winger to a one-year contract.

After a winless start to the regular season, the San Jose Sharks are hoping an old friend named Patrick Marleau can bring some stability.

GM Doug Wilson announced that the team is signing the 40-year-old Marleau, who is the franchise leader in games (1,493), goals (508) and points (1,082). The deal is for one year with a $700,000 cap hit, which is the league minimum.

The New Jersey Devils have signed veteran defenseman Joe Morrow and waived him, hoping to send him to their AHL franchise.

The Calgary Flames announced a multiyear contract extension for general manager Brad Treliving on Thursday, hours before their season opener against Colorado.

He is entering his sixth season in the job. While with the team, Calgary has made the playoffs three times and had a record of 212-163-35. The team's longest playoff run under Treliving was reaching the second round in 2015

The Arizona Coyotes have signed goalie Darcy Kuemper to a two-year contract extension with an average annual salary of $4.5 million.

The deal announced Wednesday would keep Kuemper in the desert through the 2021-22 season.
