Seattle City Council Approves Renovation Of Key Arena

The Seattle City Council unanimously approved plans for a privately funded $700 million renovation of KeyArena on Monday, clearing one of the last major hurdles in the city's bid to land an expansion NHL franchise.

The 8-0 vote was the final step needed to strengthen Seattle's expansion application, and it means a team could be playing in the building during the 2020-21 season.

Brian Gionta Retires From NHL, Joins Sabres Front Office

Forward Brian Gionta has announced his retirement from the NHL after 16 seasons.

Gionta, 39, is a former Canadiens and Sabres captain and two-time U.S. Olympian. He won a Stanley Cup with the Devils in 2003.

"Playing with my childhood team the Sabres was a highlight of my career," the western New York native said at a news conference Monday.

With his playing career over, Gionta said he's taking a role within the Sabres organization.

Canadiens Sign Paul Byron To Four-Year Deal

The Montreal Canadiens have agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension with forward Paul Byron.

The deal, which has an average annual value of $3.4 million, was announced Sunday.

The 29-year-old Byron had 20 goals and 15 assists in 82 games with the Canadiens last season and ranked second on the team in goals.
