Maple Leafs Will Not Retain Lou Lamoriello As GM

The Toronto Maple Leafs will not bring back Lou Lamoriello as general manager for the 2018-19 season, the team announced Monday.

Lamoriello's contract expired at the end of this season. He held the post since July 2015, when he was hired from the New Jersey Devils by Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan.

In a statement, Shanahan said Lamoriello, 75, would transition to a senior adviser role.

Sabres Win NHL Draft Lottery

The Buffalo Sabres won the NHL draft lottery Saturday night, earning the opportunity to draft potential franchise defenseman Rasmus Dahlin.

"We're really looking forward to adding a great player to the team," general manager Jason Botterill said.

The Sabres haven't selected first overall since drafting center Pierre Turgeon in 1987.

Mike Babcock, Auston Matthews Deny Rift

Mike Babcock was at his daughter's graduation when he received a text message from a friend about reports of a strained relationship with star center Auston Matthews.

"I'll find out in the morning," the Toronto coach replied. "I'll meet him. I'll ask him in the morning."

As the Maple Leafs cleaned out their lockers Friday in the wake of a seven-game-series loss to the Bruins in the first round of the playoffs, Babcock and Matthews addressed speculation the coach had "lost" his player during the series.

Oilers To Retain Coach Todd McLellan

Todd McLellan will return as coach of the Oilers next season without assistants Ian Herbers and Jim Johnson.

The team said Friday that McLellan will keep his job and that Herbers and Johnson have been relieved of their duties.

The Oilers missed the playoffs with a 36-40-6 record.

Sabres Sign Victor Olofsson To Two-Year Deal

The Buffalo Sabres have signed Victor Olofsson to a two-year contract after he scored a Swedish Hockey League-leading 27 goals last season.

The Sabres selected Olofsson in the seventh round of the 2014 draft. The forward has spent the past three seasons in the SHL, collecting 50 goals and 49 assists in 150 regular-season games. Overall, Olofsson had 60 goals and 117 points in 200 games.

Flames Hire Bill Peters As Head Coach

The Flames have hired Bill Peters as the team's head coach.

The Flames introduced Peters at a news conference on Monday at Scotiabank Saddledome. He resigned as head coach of the Hurricanes on Friday after four seasons and a year remaining on his contract.

The Flames fired Glen Gulutzan and assistants Dave Cameron and Paul Gerrard last week after missing the playoffs with a 37-35-10 record.

In his NHL head coaching debut, Peters went 137-138-53 with the Hurricanes but wasn't able to get the team into the playoffs.

Chuck Fletcher will not return as general manager of the Minnesota Wild, owner Craig Leipold announced Monday. Fletcher's contract was up after this season, and the team decided not to offer a new one.

Brent Flahr, senior vice president of hockey operations, will serve as acting general manager.

Carolina Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters has resigned, the team announced Friday.

Peters, 51, went 137-138-53 in his four seasons with the Hurricanes, who missed the Stanley Cup playoffs for the ninth consecutive season -- the longest drought in the NHL.

"I have a lot of respect for Bill as a person and coach," owner Tom Dundon said in a statement. "We thank him for his time with the Hurricanes and wish him success in whatever comes next."

Gulutzan, 46, guided the Flames to the playoffs after his first season in 2016-17, though the Flames were swept in the first round by the Ducks. The Flames missed the playoffs this past season with a 37-35-10 record. The team especially faltered down the stretch, losing 17 of its last 24 games.
