Devils Beat Odds To Win NHL Draft Lottery

The New Jersey Devils won the 2019 NHL draft lottery after entering Tuesday night's event in Toronto with the third-best odds.

It's the second lottery win in three years for the Devils. They won it in 2017 and selected center Nico Hischier.

"I said the No. 1 thing we needed was [more] talent, and this is a huge part of getting more talent. It's a huge day for the Devils," GM Ray Shero said after the draw.

The Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals aggressively cleared salary cap space and found a potential starting job for their backup netminder in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche before Friday's NHL draft in Dallas.

The Capitals sent defenseman Brooks Orpik, 37, and goalie Philipp Grubauer, 26, to the Avalanche for a second-round pick, No. 47 overall, in the 2018 draft.

The Buffalo Sabres won the NHL draft lottery Saturday night, earning the opportunity to draft potential franchise defenseman Rasmus Dahlin.

"We're really looking forward to adding a great player to the team," general manager Jason Botterill said.

The Sabres haven't selected first overall since drafting center Pierre Turgeon in 1987.

Stars To Host 2018 NHL Draft

The Dallas Stars will host the 2018 NHL draft at American Airlines Center.

The NHL and the Stars announced Saturday night that the draft will be Friday-Saturday, June 22-23. The first round will be June 22, and the final six rounds will be June 23.

Dallas will host the draft for the first time. The franchise is celebrating its 25th season in Texas after leaving Minnesota.

Blue Jackets Send 2nd Round Pick To Canucks For John Tortorella

The Columbus Blue Jackets will send a 2017 second round pick to the Vancouver Canucks as compensation for hiring John Tortorella in 2015.

The Blue Jackets' pick in the second round is No. 55 overall.

Tortorella, 58, led the Blue Jackets to a franchise-record 108 points in the 2016-17 season.
