Ducks Sign Bodie To Two-Year Extension

The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed right wing Troy Bodie to a two-year contract extension through the 2010-11 NHL season. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed. Bodie, 24 (1/25/85), appeared in four games with Anaheim last season, going scoreless. Signed as a free agent on July 22, 2008, Bodie made his NHL debut on Jan. 16 at Pittsburgh, recording 6:44 TOI. He spent the remainder of the 2008-09 season with Anaheim?s then-primary developmental affiliate in Iowa, scoring 15-12=27 points with 105 penalty minutes (PIM) in 71 games. A native of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Bodie has appeared in 153 career AHL games, earning 24-19=43 points with 275 PIM. The 6-4, 215-pound winger spent the 2007-08 season with Springfield (AHL), recording 9-6=15 points in 62 contests. He logged 108 PIM with the Falcons, finishing third on the team. Originally selected by Edmonton in the ninth round (278th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Bodie made his professional debut in 2006-07, splitting the season with Stockton (ECHL) and Hamilton (AHL).

Blake Signs One-Year Deal To Stay In San Jose

San Jose defenseman Rob Blake has agreed to a one-year deal to remain with the Sharks, as reported by ESPN on Tuesday. Blake was scheduled to become a free agent when the period opened at midnight Wednesday. The deal is worth $3.5M in base salary, plus bonuses. Blake had 45 points and a plus-15 rating in 73 games with the Sharks last season, when he earned $5 million. Blake has 747 points (233 goals, 514 assists) in 1,200 career regular-season games in 18 NHL seasons.

Jackets Hire Rook As Goaltending Coach

The Columbus Blue Jackets have hired Dave Rook as the club?s goaltending coach, General Manager Scott Howson announced today. Rook, who served as a goaltending consultant for the St. Louis Blues from 2006-09, began working with the club during this week?s Development Camp. ?We are very pleased to welcome Dave to our coaching staff,? said Howson. ?He is an experienced coach who helped Steve Mason become a prolific goaltender in the Ontario Hockey League, which has led to his success in the National Hockey League. We feel that Dave can work with the goaltenders in our system and take them to a higher level.? In addition to his work with St. Louis? affiliates and goaltending prospects, Rook has spent the past six years as the goaltending coach for the OHL?s London Knights, where he worked with current Blue Jackets netminder Steve Mason. In 2006-07, Mason was named the OHL Goaltender of the Year and a year later he was again one of the league?s top players and earned Most Valuable Player and Top Goaltender honors helping Team Canada win the gold medal at the 2008 World Junior Championships. A native of London, Ontario, Rook played professionally in Europe for five seasons from 1991-96 before embarking on his teaching and consulting career. He worked for the London (Ontario) Nationals Junior B team from 1996-2003 before joining the Knights for the 2003-04 season and later helped London win the Memorial Cup championship in 2004-05.

Fedorov Signs Deal To Play In Russia

Sergei Fedorov is leaving the NHL to play in his homeland, according to an Associated Press report. The 1994 league MVP and three-time Stanley Cup winner with the Red Wings has signed a two-year deal with Russian club Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Kontinental Hockey League. Fedorov?s agent, Pat Brisson, called the Capitals on Thursday to inform them of the 39-year-old forward?s decision. Fedorov was set to become a free agent next week after helping the Capitals make the playoffs the past two seasons.

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today the appointment of Dan Laperriere as assistant coach of the Lake Erie Monsters, the team?s American Hockey League affiliate. Laperriere, 40, spent the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons as a player/assistant coach for the Central Hockey League?s Arizona Sundogs before retiring and moving into a full-time assistant coaching role for the 2008-09 campaign. ?As a former defenseman, Dan played at a high level, and we look forward to having him coach our defensive prospects,? said Lake Erie Head Coach David Quinn. A native of Laval, Quebec, Laperriere was St. Louis? fourth selection (fifth round, 93rd overall) in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. The defenseman played four seasons at St. Lawrence University and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award during his senior campaign. Laperriere began his professional career during the 1992-93 season, skating with the Peoria Rivermen of the International Hockey League. That same year, he made his NHL debut by appearing in five games for the Blues. The son of Hockey Hall of Famer Jacques Laperriere, Dan appeared in 48 NHL games over four seasons with St. Louis and Ottawa, totaling two goals and five assists. He capped off his 16-year professional career by leading the Sundogs to their first-ever CHL title in 2007-08.

GM Darryl Sutter hired his brother Brent Sutter to be the new head coach of the Flames on Tuesday, according to an Associated Press report. The addition of Brent pushes the total number of Sutters in the Flames organization to five. Brother Duane is director of player personnel, brother Ron is a scout and Darryl?s son Brett played for the Flames farm team last season. The team has also hired Ryan McGill, Dave Lowry and Jamie McLennan assistant coaches.

Avs Name Quinn New Coach Of AHL Lake Erie

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today the appointment of David Quinn as the new head coach of the Lake Erie Monsters, the team?s American Hockey League affiliate. Quinn, 42, has spent the past five seasons as the associate head coach at Boston University (Hockey East), where he helped lead the Terriers to the NCAA national championship in 2008-09. During Quinn?s tenure as associate head coach, the Terriers posted a 123-57-25 record (.661), including a 35-6-4 mark a season ago. ?David is a proven winner who has successfully coached young players throughout their careers,? said Avalanche General Manager Greg Sherman. ?He played a significant role in the success of Boston University?s program, and has the necessary experience to lead our young prospects in Cleveland.? Prior to his time at Boston University, Quinn spent two seasons (2002-04) as head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team within USA Hockey?s National Team Development Program. There, he guided the team to a 35-26-8 record and earned USA Hockey?s Developmental Coach of the Year award in 2003. Before his stint with the NTDP, Quinn spent six seasons (1996-2002) as the top assistant coach and head recruiter for the University of Nebraska-Omaha, helping to establish the first men's Division I ice hockey program at the school. Prior to his role at Nebraska-Omaha, Quinn was the top assistant at Northeastern University, where he was responsible for recruiting, off-ice conditioning, scouting, video coordination and game-night coaching. A native of Cranston, R.I., Quinn?s involvement with USA Hockey in a coaching capacity dates back to 1995, when he served as a member of the coaching staff for the U.S. Women?s Select Camp. He served as an assistant coach for the silver-medal winning 1999 and 2000 U.S. Women's National Teams at the IIHF World Women's Championship and was also selected as an assistant coach for the U.S. National Junior Team at the 2005 IIHF World Junior Championship. In addition, he served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Men?s National Team at the 2007 IIHF World Championship. Quinn was the Minnesota North Stars? first selection (first round, 13th overall) in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. A standout defenseman during his three-year career at Boston University, Quinn earned All-Hockey East laurels in 1985-86 after totaling 22 points (2g/20a) in 37 games as a sophomore. Prior to his senior season, Quinn was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Christmas Disease that forced him to retire from the game. He later attempted a comeback, spending the 1991-92 season with the AHL?s Binghamton Rangers and the 1992-93 campaign with the International Hockey League?s Cleveland Lumberjacks before joining the coaching ranks.

Avalanche Signs McLeod To Three-Year Deal

The Avalanche formally announced today that the team has signed forward Cody McLeod to a three-year contract. McLeod, who turns 25 this Friday, scored 15 goals with five assists and 162 penalty minutes in 79 games during his second NHL season in 2008-09. He was one of four NHL players with at least 15 goals and 150 PIM and became only the second player in Avalanche history to reach both marks in a single year (Chris Simon, 1995-96). McLeod led Colorado with 194 hits and shared the club lead in game-winning goals with three. The Binscarth, Manitoba native finished third on the team with 15 goals, all at even strength. He was one of only three NHL players to score at least 15 goals without a power-play or short-handed tally. McLeod finished second on the Avs with 10 fighting majors. ?Cody has been an important member of our team over the last two seasons,? said Avalanche General Manager Greg Sherman. ?He plays a physical game and can also contribute offensively. He is entering the prime years of his career and we look forward to having him remain in an Avalanche sweater.? McLeod, who signed with Colorado as a non-drafted free agent on July 6, 2006, made his NHL debut on Dec. 19, 2007 and went on to dress in each of the final 49 regular-season games and all 10 playoff contests in 2007-08. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound left winger tallied nine points (4g/5a) with 120 penalty minutes in his first NHL campaign, making him the only rookie in Avalanche history to surpass 100 PIM.
