Ducks Sign Kyle Calder To One-Year Deal

The Ducks announced today that the NHL club has signed left wing Kyle Calder to a one-year contract. Calder was subsequently assigned to Bakersfield, Anaheim?s development affiliate in the ECHL. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed. Calder attended the Ducks? 2009 Training Camp on a tryout basis last month, going scoreless with two penalty minutes in four games. Calder, who was released from his tryout on Sept. 26, spent the 2008-09 regular season with Los Angeles.

Chelios Signs With AHL Chicago Wolves

Chris Chelios, the 47-year-old defenseman who spent 25 years in the NHL, signed Tuesday with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL, according to an Associated Press report. Chelios, who played last season with the Red Wings, will make his debut with the Wolves on Friday during a home game against Manitoba. Terms were not disclosed.

Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced Monday that the club has signed defenseman Ryan Ellis, the club's first choice (11th overall) in the 2009 Entry Draft, to a three-year entry-level contract. Ellis, 18, helped Windsor (OHL) win the 2009 Memorial Cup and Ontario Hockey League title a season ago, being named to the Memorial Cup All-Star Team in process. The Hamilton, Ont., native led all OHL defensemen in points (89), goals (22) and assists (67) in 2008-09 en route to winning the 2009 Max Kaminsky Trophy as the OHL's most outstanding defenseman. In 2009-10, Ellis has appeared in seven games for the Spitfires, recording 10 assists and a plus-7 rating.

Blue Jackets Sign Russell To Extension

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman Kris Russell to a three-year contract extension, General Manager Scott Howson announced Saturday. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed. Russell, 22, has registered four goals and 28 assists for 32 points and 42 penalty minutes in 137 career games with the Blue Jackets. He notched 2-19-21 and 28 penalty minutes in 66 games with Columbus last season. His point total ranked third among club defensemen and nearly doubled the output of his rookie season in 2008-09 when he collected 2-8-10 and 14 penalty minutes in 67 games. ?Kris is an important player for us, not only in the present, but in the future,? said Howson. ?We believe he has just scratched the surface of his potential.?

The Red Wings have signed veteran forward Brad May to a one-year deal worth $500,000, according to an ESPN.com report. May, who played with the Maple Leafs at the end of last season, joined the Red Wings on a tryout basis in September. He was sent on a tryout to Grand Rapids of AHL when the Red Wings cut their roster, but they clearly kept their eye on him.
