Jakub Vrana will be out four months for the Detroit Red Wings because of a shoulder injury that will require surgery.

The 25-year-old forward was injured during the first 10 minutes of practice Sunday, his first day in camp because of visa issues.

Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin will miss at least the first two months of the 2021-22 NHL season as he recovers from knee surgery, general manager Ron Hextall announced on Thursday.

Philadelphia Flyers center Kevin Hayes will miss six to eight weeks after he had abdominal surgery Tuesday.

Flyers coach Alain Vigneault said Hayes was skating with his teammates Monday at the team complex in Voorhees, New Jersey, when he "felt something in his groin." Hayes had surgery and could miss roughly the first 10 games of the season.

Patrick Kane said he has been working through an unspecified issue that has been bothering the Chicago Blackhawks forward since before the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"It's something that I worked on all summer, so it's been, I don't want to say frustrating, but it's been like nagging me a little bit," Kane said at the NHL/NHLPA Player Media Tour on Thursday. "We're at the point now where I think it's finally starting to turn the corner and seeing some progress."

Sidney Crosby said he hopes to recover in about six weeks after having surgery Sept. 8 to address a problem with his left wrist he has had for seven years.

"It's not something that's really a common procedure for hockey, so it's not like I know 10 or 15 guys who've had this done and I know what the time frame's going to be," the Pittsburgh Penguins captain said at the NHL/NHLPA Player Media Tour on Thursday.

"I think it's somewhere around six weeks. It could be less. It could be a little more. It's one of those things that I don't really have a great gauge."

Carey Price is in the Montreal Canadiens gym and medical clinic almost every day, working a surgically repaired knee back into shape for what will be the goalie's 15th NHL season. It's a return to business after a busy, short offseason, the Canadiens having gone to the 2021 Stanley Cup Final, losing the best-of-7 series in five games to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Auston Matthews will have the splint removed from his surgically repaired left wrist later this month and said he is optimistic he'll be ready for the Toronto Maple Leafs season opener against the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 13.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will have to start the season without captain Sidney Crosby.

The team announced Wednesday that the two-time Hart Trophy winner will be out at least six weeks after undergoing wrist surgery.
