Tuukka Rask said he could be ready to return from offseason hip surgery in late December, and when he does, the unrestricted free agent goalie only wants to play for the Boston Bruins.

"I'll be ready to go probably around Christmas time, January," Rask told WEEI 93.7 FM on Wednesday. "So hopefully I can start skating here in a month and a half or so and then progress from there and be ready to go in January."

Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews had wrist surgery Friday and is expected to need a "minimum" of six weeks to recover.

The team said Matthews, who won the Rocket Richard Trophy last season as the NHL's top goal scorer, had the surgery following "consultations with specialists and Maple Leafs medical staff."

Jonathan Toews doesn't yet have a timetable to return to the Chicago Blackhawks, but general manager Stan Bowman is optimistic the center will play at some point this season.

"Same answer I gave the other day which is, we're all hopeful that he continues on his path and training and feeling better. Nothing's derailed that," Bowman said Monday. "But with what he's gone through, we don't know where it's going to be. So here we are today, things are looking good and that's our thought moving forward."
