Kris Letang will be out indefinitely after the Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman suffered a stroke earlier this week, the team said Wednesday.

Penguins general manager Ron Hextall said in a statement that Letang was taken to a hospital Monday after reporting his symptoms to the team's medical staff. The Penguins said the six-time All-Star was not experiencing any lasting effects and that this is not believed to be career-threatening.

The Toronto Maple Leafs placed defenseman Morgan Rielly on long-term injured reserve with a knee injury Tuesday.

Rielly was hurt in a collision with New York forward Kyle Palmieri early in the third period of Toronto's 3-2 overtime loss to the Islanders at home Monday night.

Rielly has no goals and 16 assists in 20 games this season and is averaging 23 minutes of ice time.

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Patrik Laine will miss 3-4 weeks with a sprained ankle, the team announced Monday.

Laine was hurt during Columbus' game against the New York Islanders on Saturday.

An already challenging season was further amplified Friday when the Columbus Blue Jackets announced star defenseman Zach Werenski is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season because of a separated shoulder and torn labrum.

Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane will miss three to four months after being cut on the left wrist by a skate blade, the team announced Wednesday.

The injury occurred during Edmonton's 3-2 win at Tampa Bay on Tuesday night.

Boston Bruins star defenseman Charlie McAvoy is hopeful to return to their lineup soon as he works back from a "complex" shoulder injury that required offseason surgery.

McAvoy returned to practice last week and was on the ice for a lengthy skating session at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, ahead of Boston's game with the New York Rangers.

Lightning star defenseman Victor Hedman was scratched from the lineup for Tuesday night's game against the Ottawa Senators because of an undisclosed upper-body injury.

The Lightning said Hedman is day-to-day.
