Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith has been suspended for the remainder of the preseason plus five regular-season games for his hit to the head of Chicago's Ben Smith earlier this week. Brendan Smith's suspension, without pay, covers a total of eight games. He loses $23,648.65 in salary.

Suspended Ducks left wing Jean-Francois Jacques has been sent to the minors after clearing waivers. Anaheim sent Jacques to Syracuse of the AHL on Thursday.

The NHL has suspended Wild forward Brad Staubitz and Blue Jackets defenseman James Wisniewski indefinitely after separate incidents in a Friday night preseason game between the teams. Both players have been offered an in-person hearing with the league to determine the length of the ban, according to an ESPN.com report.

A hit from behind in a preseason game has earned Flames forward Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond a seat for the rest of preseason and the Flames' season opener, the NHL announced Thursday. Letourneau-Leblond's hit from behind on the Canucks' Matt Clackson will also cost him $6,042 in salary, league senior vice president of player safety Brendan Shanahan said.

Shelley Suspended 10 Games

Jody Shelley of the Flyers has been suspended a total of 10 games and fined for a hit that drove Darryl Boyce of the Maple Leafs face-first into the boards on Wednesday, according to an ESPN.com report. Shelley will miss the rest of the preseason and the Flyers' first five regular-season games for the hit, which drew a five-minute major for boarding.
