Islanders Suspend Nabokov

Jun 8, 2014 9:12 AM

The Islanders suspended goalie Evgeni Nabokov for failing to report to the team after being claimed off waivers, the team announced Tuesday. The Islanders nabbed Nabokov two days after the 35-year-old goalie signed a one-year contract with the Red Wings. He had spent this season with SKA St. Petersburg of Russia's KHL, and according to the collective bargaining agreement, any player who starts the season with a team overseas must clear waivers first. Nabokov had been against joining the Islanders from the start, according to the ESPN.com report.

Mike Brown Suspended 3 Games

Oct 15, 2014 2:12 AM

Maple Leafs right winger Mike Brown was suspended for three games without play by the NHL on Friday for a hit to the head on Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski. Late in the second period in Phoenix's 5-1 home victory Thursday night, Brown leveled Jovanovski with a shoulder hit to the head. No penalty was called on the play. "It's the game of hockey and I play that style of game," Brown said Thursday night. "I'd never try to hurt anyone. If he hadn't reached for the puck his head wouldn't have gone down. The refs made a good call. Obviously, they didn't call it for a reason. It wasn't a bad hit."

Kostopoulos Suspended Six Games

Flames forward Tom Kostopoulos was suspended six games by the NHL on Sunday for his head shot on Red Wings defenseman Brad Stuart. Stuart was injured during the third period of Detroit's 5-4 shootout victory at Calgary on Friday night. He's expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks. "Kostopoulos delivered a blow to the head of an unsuspecting and vulnerable player," NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell said in a statement. "As well, he targeted the head of his opponent and, while the hit was not from the blindside, the head was the principle point of contact."
