Ducks Name Paul MacLean Assistant Coach

The Ducks announced today that the club has named Paul MacLean assistant coach. Winner of the 2013 Jack Adams Award as the NHL Coach of the Year with Ottawa, MacLean returns to Anaheim where he served as an assistant coach for two seasons from 2002-04. MacLean will join Bruce Boudreau’s coaching staff with fellow assistant coaches Trent Yawney and Scott Niedermayer, goaltending consultant Dwayne Roloson and video coordinator Joe Piscotty 

MacLean most recently served as head coach of the Senators from 2011-15, leading the club to a 114-90-35 record and a pair of Stanley Cup Playoff appearances in 2012 and 2013. MacLean helped the Senators to a 25-17-6 record in 2013-14 and the club’s second consecutive postseason appearance en route to his first career Jack Adams Award in his second straight year as a nominee.

Lightning Re-Sign Mike Blunden

The Lightning have re-signed right wing Mike Blunden to a one-year, two-way contract today, vice president and GM Steve Yzerman announced.
 
Blunden played in two games with the Lightning last season, recording two penalty minutes.  He played in 33 games with Tampa Bay’s top minor league affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, in 2014-15, recording 13 goals and 22 points. Despite a limited number of games he ranked tied for sixth on the Crunch for goals.
 
A native of Toronto, Ontario, Blunden has appeared in 104 NHL games with the Lightning, the Canadiens, the Blue Jackets and Blackhawks.  
 
Blunden was drafted by Chicago in the second round, 43rd overall, at the 2005 NHL Draft.

Flames Sign Mikael Backlund To Extension

The Flames have signed center Mikael Backlund to a multiyear contract, the team announced Saturday.

The three-year deal is worth $3.575 million annually, according to a source.

Backlund scored 10 goals and 27 points in 52 regular-season games last season after missing 30 games because of injury.

Preds Sign Goalie Juuse Saros From Finland

The Predators have signed goaltender Juuse Saros to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Finland native expected to play in North America next season.

The Predators announced the deal Tuesday.

Saros, 20, was the 99th selection in the 2013 draft by Nashville. He ranked in the top five of the Finnish Elite League this season in shutouts (six), minutes played (2,773), save percentage (.929) and goals-against average (2.14). He was the Finnish Elite League's Rookie of the Year in 2013-14.

Leafs Add Four Assistant Coaches To Babcock's Staff

The Maple Leafs announced Tuesday that Jim Hiller, D.J. Smith and Andrew Brewer have been named assistant coaches on Mike Babcock’s staff. In addition, the Maple Leafs have hired Matthew J. Herring to be the club’s head strength and conditioning coach.

“I’m excited to have them join the organization," said head coach Mike Babcock. "We have a lot of work ahead of us but are all thrilled to be part of the Maple Leafs. We’re grateful for the cooperation afforded to us by the Detroit Red Wings, Oshawa Generals and San Antonio Spurs.”

Hiller, 46, spent last season alongside Babcock as an assistant coach with the Red Wings in 2014-15, in charge of the powerplay which led the NHL in powerplay goals. Prior to his time in Detroit, Hiller spent five seasons as head coach of the WHL's Tri-City Americans.

Smith, 38, spent the last three seasons as head coach of the OHL’s Oshawa Generals. During the 2014-15 season, Smith compiled a regular season record of 51-11-2-4 on route to winning both the OHL Championship and Memorial Cup Title. 

Brewer, 29, spent last season with Mike Babcock as a Red Wings Assistant Coach, coordinating the team’s coaching staff.  Prior to joining Detroit, he spent three years with Hockey Canada as their video coach for several international events including Canada’s gold-medal team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Herring, 29, spent the last two seasons as an Athletic Performance Associate with the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA. With the Spurs, his responsibilities included strength & conditioning, sports science and nutrition. He was a part of the Spurs organization during their NBA Championship season in 2013-14.

Ducks Sign Marcus Pettersson To Entry Deal

The Ducks announced today that the club has signed defenseman Marcus Pettersson to a three-year entry-level contract beginning in the 2015-16 season.

Pettersson, 19, began the 2014-15 season with Skelleftea AIK (Swedish Hockey League), going scoreless in 14 games. Pettersson also appeared in 20 games with Skelleftea’s Under-20 team, recording 10 points. The native of Skelleftea, Sweden was loaned to Vita Hasten (HockeyAllsvenskan) for the remainder of the season. He scored 4 points with 16 PIM in 10 games to conclude the regular season.

Selected by Anaheim in the second round (38th overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft, Pettersson has appeared in numerous international tournaments for Sweden.

Montreal Signs Nathan Beaulieu To New Two-Year Deal

Defenseman Nathan Beaulieu has signed a two-year, $2 million contract, the Canadiens said Saturday.

Beaulieu, 22, had one goal and eight assists in 64 games this season.

Beaulieu is set to earn $1 million per season, a slight increase on the $925,000 he made in 2014-15 in the final season of a three-year entry-level contract.

Wings Hire Jeff Blashill As New Head Coach

Jeff Blashill was hired as head coach Tuesday by the Red Wings, ending a fairly unsuspenseful search that began when Mike Babcock left to take over the Maple Leafs.

Blashill has coached Detroit's minor league affiliate in Grand Rapids for the past three seasons, and he was an obvious candidate once Babcock left.

Jackets Re-Sign Austin Madaisky To One-Year, Two-Way Deal

The Blue Jackets have re-signed defenseman Austin Madaisky to a one-year, two-way NHL/AHL contract for the 2015-16 National Hockey League season, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today.  

Madaisky, 23, posted 12 goals and 23 assists for 35 points with 28 penalty minutes and a +4 plus/minus rating in 53 games with the Springfield Falcons of the AHL during the 2014-15 season.  He led all Falcons defensemen in goals, assists and points and was tied for seventh among AHL defensemen in goals and 17th-tied in points.
