Maple Leafs Sign Forward Rich Clune

The Maple Leafs announced Thursday that the team has signed forward Rich Clune to an NHL contract. Clune, who had previously signed an AHL contract with the Toronto Marlies this past off-season, will join the Maple Leafs today for practice.

Clune, 28, has collected five points (two goals, three assists) and 18 penalty minutes in eight games with the Toronto Marlies so far this season. Clune has played in 120 career NHL games with Los Angeles and Nashville, registering 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists). He has also skated in 345 career AHL games, collecting 97 points (34 goals, 63 assists).

Clune was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the 3rd round (71st overall) during the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Slava Voynov To Resume Career After Serving Jail Time

Two-time Stanley Cup-winning defenseman Slava Voynov will resume his career with SKA St. Petersburg after serving time in jail on a domestic violence charge in the United States.

Voynov, a former defenseman with the Kings, was suspended for the final 76 games of the 2014-15 NHL season and returned to Russia after serving two months in jail, plus time in immigration custody.

In a brief statement, SKA says Voynov, 25, has signed a three-year contract.

Predators Sign Mattias Ekholm To Six-Year, $22.5M Deal

Predators President of Hockey Operations/GM David Poile announced today that restricted free agent defenseman Mattias Ekholm has signed a six-year, $22.5 million contract that carries an average annual value of $3.75 million.

Ekholm, 25, has a goal and two assists in seven games in 2015-16, giving him 30 points (9g-21a) and 66 penalty minutes in 152 career games since the 2011-12 season. 

Nashville's seventh choice, 102nd overall (fourth round), in the 2009 Entry Draft, Ekholm has represented Sweden in the past two World Championships, helping the Tre Kronor to a bronze medal in 2014, being named one of the nation’s three best players after tying for second (with Predators teammate Roman Josi) among tournament defensemen in points (2g-5a-7pts), while leading all Swedish skaters in average ice time.

Kings Sign Peter Budaj To One-Year Contract

The Kings have signed goaltender Peter Budaj to a one-year contract, Kings President/GM Dean Lombardi announced today.

The 30-year-old Budaj is a native of Banska Bystrica, Slovakia who appeared in 19 regular-season games last season with St. John’s (AHL) where he compiled an 0-9-6 record with a .888 SV% and a 3.55 GAA.

Budaj has appeared in 296 regular-season games in nine seasons in the NHL with Colorado and Montreal registering a 124-107-36 record.

Ducks Sign Simon Despres To Five-Year Extension

The Ducks have signed defenseman Simon Despres to a five-year extension, the team announced Friday.

The deal is worth $18.5 million, an average of $3.7 million per season, a source told ESPN.com. The contract runs through 2020-21.

Tomas Fleischmann Signs One-Year Deal With Canadiens

Tomas Fleischmann and the Canadiens agreed to a one-year contract reportedly worth $750,000 on Sunday.

Fleischmann, 31, played 66 games with the Florida Panthers and Anaheim Ducks in 2014-15, scoring eight times and adding 19 assists.

Fleischmann has 123 goals and 187 assists in 581 regular-season games with the Washington Capitals, Colorado Avalanche, Panthers and Ducks. He added four goals and five assists in 35 playoff games.

Hurricanes Sign Eddie Lack To Two-Year Extension

The Carolina Hurricanes and goalie Eddie Lack have agreed to a two-year contract extension.

The deal announced Saturday will pay Lack $2.5 million next season and $3 million in 2017-18. He is entering the final year of a deal that will pay him $1.3 million this season.

Lack spent the preseason competing with Cam Ward for the starting position in goal for the Hurricanes.
