Moyes Challenges Legality of Reinsdorf's Bid For Coyotes

Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes has challenged Jerry Reinsdorf?s bid to buy the financially troubled team, according to an Associated Press report. In a motion filed in bankruptcy court on Thursday, Moyes? attorney says that Reinsdorf?s bid ?cannot be approved as a matter of law? and that ?there are no qualified bidders? based on terms set by the court.

The NHL Board of Governors approved a bid Wednesday by Jerry Reinsdorf to assume ownership of the financially troubled Coyotes, and unanimously rejected an application by Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie to buy the team, according to an Associated Press report. The group heading by Reinsdorf, the owner of the White Sox and Bulls, was the only one of three applicants to gain the board?s approval on Wednesday.

Reinsdorf Group Enters $148M Coyotes Bid

A group led by Jerry Reinsdorf submitted a bid for the Coyotes on Friday. In addition, an offer by a second bidder was promised. Reinsdorf's offer to buy the team for about $148 million was expected, and a group headed by Canadian-born businessman Daryl Jones plans to submit an offer by Aug. 5. Both offers would keep the team in Glendale.

Shoplifting Charge Against Nilan Dropped

A shoplifting charge against former NHL player Chris Nilan has been dismissed. Braintree, Mass. police say Nilan and another man were arrested Wednesday at a mall after security guards accused Nilan of stealing a bathing suit. The case was dismissed Thursday after Nilan, 51, agreed to stay out of the store and paid $100 court costs.

Gretzky Will Give Deposition In Coyotes Case

Wayne Gretzky has agreed to give a deposition in the fight in U.S. Bankruptcy Court over who will own the Coyotes and where they will play. Gretzky, who coaches the Coyotes and owns a small share of the team, reached an agreement with the city of Glendale, Ari. over the deposition and the sharing of documents.

Team Doctors Not To Blame In Cherepanov's Death

Team doctors are not to blame for the death of Alexei Cherepanov, who collapsed during a Continental Hockey League game last year in Russia, according to an Associated Press report on Thursday. Doctors with the Siberian team Avangard Omsk had no reason to suspect the 19-year-old Cherepanov suffered from a chronic heart problem and did not prescribe the medicine he was taking, the federal Investigative Committee said Thursday. Team doctors will not face a criminal investigation.

NHL, NBC Extend Agreement

The NHL and NBC have agreed to a two-year extension of their TV contract that will keep the league on the network from the Winter Classic at Fenway Park through the end of the 2010-11 season, according to an Associated Press report. Commissioner Gary Bettman made the announcement on Wednesday at the home of the Red Sox, where the Bruins will play the Flyers in the annual outdoor game that has become a New Year?s Day tradition.
