MSG, Cheerleader Settle Sex Discrimination Lawsuit

Oct 31, 2014 9:22 PM

Madison Square Garden settled Wednesday with a former New York Rangers' cheerleader who sued for sexual discrimination, avoiding the potential of another embarrassing trial. Courtney Prince was fired in January 2004. She later claimed MSG failed to properly protect the dozen skating cheerleaders from being touched inappropriately when they went into the crowd at games and required them to be glamorous and to wear padded bras, fake eyelashes and hairpieces. A statement released on her behalf said, "We resolved this matter with no admission of wrongdoing on the part of any party, and I will have no further comment." Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

Sharks' Clowe Arrested On Suspicion Of DUI

Nov 18, 2014 4:43 PM

Sharks' forward Ryane Clowe was arrested early Monday morning on suspicion of drunken driving. Clowe, who has been out of the Sharks' lineup for two months after undergoing knee surgery, was stopped by police in suburban Los Gatos for a minor traffic violation. Authorities said the 25-year-old player failed a field sobriety test and was booked into the Santa Clara County jail. "I am embarrassed by what happened but take full responsibility for this regrettable mistake," Clowe said. "For situations like I faced last evening, our team has a very clear alternative transportation policy in place. I failed to follow it, and for that I am deeply sorry."

Report: Bertuzzi Testifies Moore Hit Was Ordered

May 27, 2014 7:00 PM

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice released Todd Bertuzzi's and Vancouver Canucks' General Manager Dave Nonis' discovery statements related to Steve Moore's lawsuit on Tuesday. According to TSN of Canada, Bertuzzi alleged in his testimony that then-Canucks' Coach Marc Crawford suggested during the second intermission of Vancouver's March 8, 2004, game against the Colorado Avalanche that Moore needed to "pay the price" for delivering a questionable hit on Markus Naslund that was not penalized during a Feb. 16, 2004, game. Bertuzzi said in his testimony that he felt bad about Moore's injuries but felt he had no choice but to challenge Moore on the ice. "There's a difference between sending players out and knowing that once in a while you have a job to do and whether it's your description to do it," Bertuzzi testified when asked how often Crawford would send players out to fight other players. Bertuzzi's lawyer objected to questions about unwritten "codes" in the NHL.

Magnuson's Family Asks Judge Not To Send Ramage To Jail

Oct 14, 2014 11:18 PM

The family of former Blackhawks' defenceman Keith Magnuson is asking a judge to not send the former NHL player responsible for his death to jail. Rob Ramage was found guilty in October of impaired and dangerous driving in the crash on Dec. 15, 2003, that killed Magnuson. Magnuson, 56, died instantly when a rental car driven by Ramage, 48, slammed head-on into another vehicle in Woodbridge, Ont. At a sentencing hearing Tuesday in a court in Newmarket, Ont., Magnuson's family asked the judge to sentence Ramage to community service instead of jail time so he can speak in schools about drinking and driving.

NHL Says Steriod Use Not A Problem In Hockey

Oct 5, 2014 6:00 PM

With baseball still buzzing about the Mitchell Report, the NHL asserted Friday that widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs is not an issue among hockey players. "I don't think we've ever had the same problem," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Canadian Press. "Hockey players have been tested for many years in international play. It's simply not part of their culture. And we have tested NHL players up to three times a year since January 2006 and obviously have not had many issues other than one failed test."

The Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland decided to exercise their right to revisit the deal between the International Ice Hockey Federation member associations, their leagues and the National Hockey League. Did Crawford Order Bertuzzi's On-Ice Attack On Moore?

Jun 8, 2014 6:02 AM

Todd Bertuzzi's on-ice attack on Steve Moore might have been ordered by former Canucks' Coach Marc Crawford, according to a report aired on CBC's "The National" Wednesday night. Bertuzzi grabbed Moore from behind during a 2004 game, punched him on the side of his head and then landed on top of Moore, driving his head into the ice. The bloodied Colorado player was removed on a stretcher. Moore sustained a broken neck and a concussion. He filed a lawsuit against Bertuzzi, the Canucks and their parent company in Ontario in February.
