Crosby Out Indefinitely With Broken Jaw

Penguins star Sidney Crosby is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to repair a broken jaw, according to an ESPN.com report. 

The Penguins announced Sunday on their official website that Crosby had the surgery after being hit in the mouth with a puck during Saturday's game against the Islanders.

Penguins captain Sidney Crsoby lost several teeth and needed oral surgery after he was hit in the mouth with a puck during a 2-0 win against the Islanders on Saturday.

Coach Dan Bylsma wasn't sure if the injury affected Crosby's jaw and didn't know if he would miss any more time, according to an ESPN.com report.

The Penguins welcomed Jarome Iginla to the lineup, but lost Sidney Crosby early in the first period after he was hit in the mouth with a puck.

Still, the Penguins managed to overcome the injury to Crosby on Saturday for their 15th straight victory as Matt Cooke and James Neal scored third-period goals during a 2-0 win against the Islanders.

"It's very tough to see that happen to anybody on the ice, but this is your teammate and Sid's such a great player," Iginla said. "It's a very, very unfortunate play."

Penguins center Evgeni Malkin skated with his teammates on Tuesday morning and is hopeful he can return to the lineup later this week, according to an ESPN.com report.

The reigning NHL MVP has missed Pittsburgh's last five games with an undisclosed upper body injury.

Martin Brodeur returned to Devils practice for the first time in nearly a month Monday and felt pain-free after working out for an hour at the team's practice rink, according to an ESPN.com report.

The 40-year-old will not start against the Rangers on Tuesday night, but he did not rule out backing up Johan Hedberg, who has started every game in his absence.

Geoffrion Considers Retirement

Canadiens forward Blake Geoffrion, grandson of Hall of Famer Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion and great grandson of Hall of Famer Howie Morenz, told the team that he is considering retirement after suffering a serious head injury.

Geoffrion had told ESPN.com that he was planning to retire, but sources then said he had reconsidered. The Canadiens did not indicate when a final decision will be made.

Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur skated Tuesday morning, but GM Lou Lamoriello said there still is no timetable for him to return from his back injury.

This is the first time Brodeur has skated since Feb. 24, when he pulled himself out of warmups prior to a home game against the Jets.

Evgeni Malkin Out One To Two Weeks

Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin will sit out one to two weeks with an upper-body injury, coach Dan Bylsma said Sunday.

The injury is not related to the concussion that had sidelined the league's MVP for four games, the coach said.

"That is not a concern," Bylsma said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Pronger Not Ready To Retire

Chris Pronger isn't ready to retire, even though a specialist has advised him not to return to hockey, according to an ESPN.com report.

Pronger has not played for the Flyers since Nov. 19, 2011 and still suffers from lingering effects of multiple concussions. But he wouldn't rule out attempting a return if physically possible.

"I'm just trying to get healthy and live a normal life and get better for myself and my family," Pronger said Thursday. "The rest will take care of itself."
