The Senators re-signed Daniel Alfredsson, their captain and franchise?s all-time leading scorer. to a four-year contract extension on Thursday. Financial terms were not disclosed, but TSN reported that the extension was expected to pay Alfredsson $22M and include a no-movement clause.

Jackets Name Perry Elderbroom Goaltending Consultant

The Columbus Blue Jackets have hired Perry Elderbroom as an interim goaltending consultant for the National Hockey League club, General Manager Scott Howson announced today. He will work with goaltenders throughout the Blue Jackets organization, including at the NHL level and those currently playing in the minor professional leagues and junior hockey. Elderbroom has over 20 years experience working with goaltenders with an extensive background in Europe, particularly Scandinavia, as well as with teams throughout Canadian junior hockey and professional teams in Finland, Sweden, Austria and Switzerland.

The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed defenseman Bret Hedican to a one-year contract. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed. ?Bret is a mobile defenseman coming off a strong season with Carolina last year," said Executive Vice President/General Manager Brian Burke. "He's a proven winner and class act, and we?re pleased to add him to our roster.? Hedican, 38 (8/10/70), appeared in 66 games for the Carolina Hurricanes in 2007-08, scoring 2-15=17 points with a career-high +17 rating and 70 penalty minutes (PIM). He finished tied for first on the Hurricanes and tied for 13th among NHL defensemen in plus/minus while also leading Carolina defensemen in time on ice (19:17 TOI). Originally selected by St. Louis in the 10th round of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft (198th overall), Hedican has played for the Blues (1991-94), Vancouver Canucks (1994-99), Florida Panthers (1999-02) and Carolina Hurricanes (2002-08). In 988 career NHL games, Hedican has scored 54-234=288 points with 857 PIM. A native of North St. Paul, Minnesota, Hedican appeared in all 25 of Carolina?s 2006 playoff games en route to the Stanley Cup. The 6-2, 210-pound blueliner, who also reached the Stanley Cup Final with Vancouver in 1994, has collected 4-22=26 points with 108 PIM in 108 career NHL Playoff games. A two-time U.S. Olympian in 1992 and 2006, Hedican has appeared in 14 contests for Team USA in Albertville, France and Torino, Italy.

Lightning Sign Defenseman Malik

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed defenseman Marek Malik to a one-year contract today, executive vice president and general manager Brian Lawton announced. "We are thrilled to have signed Marek to a contract,? Lawton said. ?He is a big body, at 6-foot-5 220 pounds, that will add to our overall defensive play and give us veteran leadership on the blue line." Malik, a native of Ostrava, Czech Republic, played in 42 games with the New York Rangers last season. He scored two goals and recorded 10 points. Malik led all Ranger defensemen in plus/minus rating with plus-7. The 33-year-old has played in 649 career NHL games with Hartford/Carolina, Vancouver and the Rangers, recording 33 goals and 163 points. He has amassed seven game-winning goals, three power-play goals and one shorthanded goal with a career plus/minus rating of plus-136. He ranked ninth in the NHL in plus/minus in 2006-07 with a plus-32 rating and shared the Bud Light Plus/Minus Award with Tampa Bay?s Martin St. Louis in 2003-04 with a plus-35. He has finished with a minus rating only twice in his career (1995-96, -3; 2000-01, -4) in 12 NHL seasons. He recorded a career-high seven goals in 2002-03 with the Canucks and a personal-best 23 points with Carolina in 2001-02. Malik has played in 65 career Stanley Cup Playoff games with Carolina, Vancouver and the Rangers. He has recorded two goals and 10 points.

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with free agent forward Devin DiDiomete. DiDiomete, 20, skated in 56 games with the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) last season, registering 23 goals and 33 assists for 56 points, along with 216 penalty minutes. He established career-highs in goals (23), assists (33), points (56), and penalty minutes (216). The Stratford, Ontario native ranked fourth on the club in goals, assists and points, while his 216 penalty minutes led Sarnia and ranked second in the OHL overall. In addition, he appeared in nine post-season contests with Sarnia, recording one goal and two assists for three points, along with 40 penalty minutes. The 5-11, 200-pounder has skated in 236 career OHL games with the Sudbury Wolves and Sarnia, recording 66 goals and 81 assists for 147 points, along with 736 penalty minutes. In 2006-07, DiDiomete eclipsed the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his career, registering 21 goals to rank fourth on Sudbury. He also appeared in 51 career post-season contests with Sudbury and Sarnia, registering seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points, along with 139 penalty minutes. He established playoff career-highs in games played (21), goals (six), assists (six), points (12), and penalty minutes (62) with Sudbury during the 2007 playoffs.

Kings Sign Matt Greene To 5-Year Extension

The Los Angeles Kings have signed defenseman Matt Greene to a five-year contact extension that will carry into the 2013-14 season, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not announced (Greene?s current contract is set to expire at the end of this season). Today?s signing of Greene to a five-year contract extension comes six days after the Kings signed center Anze Kopitar to a seven-year contract, the second longest in club history. Kings forward Dustin Brown last year signed a six-year contract, and forwards Jarret Stoll, four years, and Patrick O?Sullivan, three years, also recently signed long-term contracts to remain with the Kings. Greene, 25, is in his first season with the Kings after playing the last three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers. He was acquired by the Kings on June 29 with center Jarret Stoll for Lubomir Visnovsky, and on October 8 he was named one of the club?s assistant captains (along with Kopitar as Brown was named captain). In three games with the Kings this season, Greene has zero points and seven penalty minutes. Greene in 2007-08 recorded one point (an assist) and 53 penalty minutes in 46 games with Edmonton. In 2006-07 he played in 78 games and recorded 10 points (1-9=10) and 109 penalty minutes. In 154 career games with the Kings and the Oilers, the 6-3, 233-pound native of Grand Ledge, Michigan, has 13 points (1-12=13) and 212 penalty minutes. He has also played in 18 playoff games, including the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006, recording one point (an assist) and 34 penalty minutes.
