Lightning Sign Defenseman Malik

Press Release - The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed defenseman Marek Malik to a one-year contract today, executive vice president and general manager Brian Lawton announced.

"We are thrilled to have signed Marek to a contract,? Lawton said. ?He is a big body, at 6-foot-5 220 pounds, that will add to our overall defensive play and give us veteran leadership on the blue line."

Malik, a native of Ostrava, Czech Republic, played in 42 games with the New York Rangers last season. He scored two goals and recorded 10 points. Malik led all Ranger defensemen in plus/minus rating with plus-7.

The 33-year-old has played in 649 career NHL games with Hartford/Carolina, Vancouver and the Rangers, recording 33 goals and 163 points. He has amassed seven game-winning goals, three power-play goals and one shorthanded goal with a career plus/minus rating of plus-136. He ranked ninth in the NHL in plus/minus in 2006-07 with a plus-32 rating and shared the Bud Light Plus/Minus Award with Tampa Bay?s Martin St. Louis in 2003-04 with a plus-35. He has finished with a minus rating only twice in his career (1995-96, -3; 2000-01, -4) in 12 NHL seasons. He recorded a career-high seven goals in 2002-03 with the Canucks and a personal-best 23 points with Carolina in 2001-02. Malik has played in 65 career Stanley Cup Playoff games with Carolina, Vancouver and the Rangers. He has recorded two goals and 10 points. [READ]
