NHL Approves Change For Breaking Ties In Standings
The NHL has approved a change in its bylaw that governs how the league breaks ties in the standings at the end of the season, according to an Associated Press report.
Under the revised bylaw approved by the NHL Board of Governors on Tuesday, shootout wins will not be included in the tiebreaker for two teams which finish with the same amount of points. That tiebreaker is limited to regulation and overtime victories.
Devils Fined For Kovalchuk Deal
The cost of signing Ilya Kovalchuk got even more expensive for the Devils, according to an ESPN.com report on Monday.
The NHL fined the Devils $3M and took away two high draft picks over the next four years for signing Kovalchuk to a 17-year, $102M contract in July that circumvented the league's salary cap.
In handing down what might be his harshest penalty for a team salary-cap violation, commissioner Gary Bettman forced New Jersey to forfeit a first-round pick sometime over the next four years and a third-round pick next year.
Fehr Now Closer To Becoming NHLPA Director
Donald Fehr is a step closer to becoming the NHL Players? Association?s executive director, according to an Associated Press report.
The union said Saturday it has accepted the recommendation of its search committee and will put Fehr to a vote among its membership.
Players are expected to vote following individual team meetings during training camp this month and early into the regular season. Members also will vote on various amendments to the NHLPA constitution.
Preds Owners Buy Del Biaggio's Stake
The Predators owners have completed a purchase of the 26 percent stake in the team held by the bankrupt estate of a California financier jailed for fraud.
Predators Holdings LLC chairman Tom Cigarran announced Thursday that the NHL and Metro Nashville Sports Authority had approved the transaction for the ownership shares previously held by William "Boots" Del Biaggio III and his Forecheck Investments, LLC.
The group of local owners now owns more than 95 percent of the franchise's ownership shares.
Sources: Matt Hulsizer To Bid On Coyotes
The Coyotes have another interested buyer, sources told ESPN.com.
Matthew Hulsizer, CEO of PEAK6 Investments is in the final stages of negotiating a new arena lease agreement with the City of Glendale after which Hulsizer is expected to make an offer to purchase the Coyotes from the NHL.
