Ex-NHL Player Adam Johnson, 29, Dies After 'Freak Accident'

Former NHL player Adam Johnson died after a "freak accident" during his English team's game Saturday. He was 29.

The Nottingham Panthers, who play in England's Elite Ice Hockey League, announced Sunday that the organization is "heartbroken at the news of Adam's passing."

Officials stopped the Panthers' game Saturday against the Sheffield Steelers after Johnson was involved in a collision on the ice during the second period. Johnson received emergency treatment on the ice, and players eventually returned to the locker room after he was taken to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.

Senators' Shane Pinto Suspended 41-Games For Sports Wagering

Ottawa Senators center Shane Pinto has been suspended for 41 games by the NHL for activities relating to sports wagering.

"I want to apologize to the National Hockey League, the Ottawa Senators, my teammates, the fans and city of Ottawa and most importantly my family. I take full responsibility for my actions and look forward to getting back on the ice with my team," Pinto said in a statement.

The suspension is retroactive to the Senators' first game of the season. Pinto is currently without a contract as a restricted free agent.

The NHL sent an updated memo to all teams Thursday clarifying previous guidance about what players and franchises could do this season as it relates to special initiatives such as Pride Night, a league source told ESPN.

A team source told ESPN earlier this week that several NHL clubs sought clarification while also expressing concern with the league's initial memo, which they considered restrictive. The NHL issued the first memo, titled "Game and Practice-Related Special Initiatives," late last week.

Flames Exec Chris Snow Dies At Age 42 After ALS Battle

Calgary Flames assistant general manager Chris Snow has died at age 42 after a lengthy public battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.

The Flames confirmed his death Saturday night.

In a statement, the Flames said, "We, along with the entire hockey community, are mourning the passing of Chris Snow. Even while battling ALS, Chris dedicated his life to helping others and he changed the lives of so many."
