Pens Offer Church Land Use In 'Restorative Justice' Move

Apr 14, 2023 4:21 PM

More than 60 years ago, a historic Black church was forced to give up its sanctuary, compensated for what it says was a fraction of its value, to an urban renewal project that wiped out the heart of an African American neighborhood known as the Hill District.

Now, Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church is poised to recoup some of that loss and reclaim a spot near its former home. It has reached an agreement with the Pittsburgh Penguins, which now holds development rights to the site near its arena, for the church to use a 1.5-acre parcel that it envisions using for housing and other revenue-generating development.

Coyotes File $2.3B Claim Against City Of Phoenix Over Arena

Apr 6, 2023 12:19 PM

The Arizona Coyotes appeared to have finally found an answer to their arena issues by working out a deal to build an entertainment district in Tempe.

A snag with the city of Phoenix now puts that in doubt, adding another layer to the franchise's long-running bid to find a permanent home.

The Coyotes and the firm the franchise hired to develop a new arena project near Sky Harbor International Airport filed a $2.3 billion notice of claim against the city of Phoenix on Wednesday for alleged breach of contract.
