NHL Sides Swapping Proposals

After weeks of limited contact between the league and the NHLPA, the two labor sides are now back to swapping proposals.

The NHLPA submitted a counterproposal to the league Monday and the two sides plan to talk again Tuesday morning.

Gary Bettman said the league will take Monday night to review the offer before getting back to the union, but that they'll do their best to make a quick turnaround.

It has not been determined whether the sides will meet Sunday afternoon for a negotiating session.

The two sides had also convened Saturday with a series of conference calls.

NHL Makes New Offer To Players

The NHL has made a new proposal to the NHLPA with time ticking toward a canceled season, the league has confirmed.

In a statement released on Friday, deputy commissioner Bill Daly called the offer a "comprehensive proposal for a successor CBA," saying it was delivered to the union Thursday afternoon.

"We are not prepared to discuss the details of our proposal at this time," Daly said. "We are hopeful that once the union's staff and negotiating committee have had an opportunity to thoroughly review and consider our new proposal, they will share it with the players. We want to be back on the ice as soon as possible."

Sources: NHLPA Votes OK On Dissolution Plan

The NHLPA moved a step closer toward dissolving the union Friday, voting to authorize the union's executive board the discretion to file a "disclaimer of interest," sources confirmed to ESPN.com.

The affirmative vote, the result of a five-day ballot among the players, allows the board to disband the union if and when it chooses to do so.

NHL Cancels Games Through Mid-January

The NHL announced today the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through January 14.  The cancellations are necessary due to the absence of a new CBA between the NHL Players’ Association and the NHL.

A total of 625 regular-season games – 50.8 percent of the season – were scheduled for October 11 through January 14.

Fehr: NHLPA Willing To Resume Talks

According to NHLPA special counsel Steve Fehr, there has been no contact between him and NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly since Friday and no future meetings have been scheduled.

What would it take to spark a return to the negotiating table?

"A phone call," Fehr told ESPNNewYork.com when reached via telephone Monday evening. "I had the impression when we ended the session on Thursday that they had nothing more to say at this time. As soon as they're ready, we're ready."

NHL Lawsuit Assigned To Federal Judge

The NHL's lawsuit against its players was assigned to a federal judge who is a longtime Yankees fan and a former federal prosecutor.

The sides didn't talk Sunday, the 92nd day of a lockout that is threatening to wipe out the NHL season for the second time in nine years. NHL players started voting on whether to have their union give up collective bargaining rights, a "disclaimer of interest" that could be a precursor to an antitrust suit.

The case was assigned to U.S. District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer.

Despite Mediator, NHL Sides Remain Apart
