The Carolina Hurricanes have avoided a major injury concern for defenseman Tony DeAngelo while veteran blueliner Brett Pesce is nearing a return from a lower-body injury suffered in the second game of the playoffs.

Team president and general manager Don Waddell said Wednesday that Pesce has shed a walking boot, is doing work to return and should play at some point in the second-round series against the Presidents' Trophy-winning New York Rangers.

"If everything goes as expected, he shall play games this round," Waddell said in a Zoom call with reporters. "Maybe not right off the start, but will play games in this round."

Winnipeg forward Vladislav Namestnikov and defenseman Brenden Dillon are recovering from injuries and won't be available for Game 5 against Colorado on Tuesday night as the Jets try to avoid playoff elimination.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander will be a game-time decision for Game 2 on Monday night in Boston with an undisclosed injury.

"We'll see how he feels here the rest of the day here and make a decision," coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters after Monday's morning skate.

The Colorado Avalanche will be without forward Jonathan Drouin for their first-round playoff series against Winnipeg due to a lower-body injury.

Drouin got hurt when he tripped in the second period Thursday against Edmonton. He skated off the ice and didn't return.

Superstar captain Connor McDavid will sit out his third straight game Saturday when his Edmonton Oilers host the Vancouver Canucks.

Edmonton (48-24-6, 102 points) trails Vancouver (48-22-9, 105 points) by three points entering the showdown but still has one game in hand on the Canucks. And the Oilers also might have reigning Hart Trophy recipient Connor McDavid back in the lineup.

Vegas Golden Knights captain Mark Stone has been cleared to practice while he continues to recover from a lacerated spleen, the team said Friday.

Stone, who has 16 goals and 53 points in 56 games, hasn't played since Feb. 20 when he was initially ruled out with what was then designated as an upper-body injury. He's expected to participate in morning skate while wearing a noncontact sweater.

There was no timetable given by the defending Stanley Cup champions for when Stone could return to the lineup.

Filip Chytil is back practicing with the New York Rangers and could be an option for the playoffs, sources told ESPN.

The timeline on Chytil's return has not been determined, and the Rangers will take a wait-and-see approach to gauge how the 24-year-old center is feeling. However, Friday marked a big step as Chytil joined the team for practice at its training facility after being medically cleared.

New Jersey Devils star forward Jack Hughes was ruled out of Tuesday's game against the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs due to an upper-body injury.

Devils interim coach Travis Green would not specify how long that Hughes would be out of action.
