Lightning Send Lundin To Norfolk, Recall Smaby
The Lightning have reassigned defenseman Mike Lundin to the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL, Executive Vice President and GM Brian Lawton announced today.
Defenseman Matt Smaby was also recalled from his conditioning assignment.
NHL Suspends Pens' Cooke Two Games
Penguins left winger Matt Cooke was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL on Sunday for a deliberate check to the head area of Rangers center Artem Anisimov on Saturday night, according to an ESPN.com report.
Hurricanes May Be In Dump Mode
The Hurricanes, who made a deep run in the postseason last spring, are struggling mightily this year.
Carolina has just 15 points, dead last in the NHL.
The Ottawa Sun reports that Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford is already trying to unload some of the team's more expensive contracts.
Guys like defenseman Aaron Ward ($2.5 million), Joe Corvo ($2.75 million) and Niclas Wallin ($1.725 million) are all being shopped.
Only One Mike To Make Team Canada?
Senators center Mike Fisher has played well enough to get consideration for Team Canada.
However, the Ottawa Sun points out that he's unlikely to make the squad due to the presence of Flyers center Mike Richards.
"They're basically the same player and they're likely going to take a guy like Richards ahead of Fisher," said a league executive.
Penguins, Gonchar Put Talks On Hold
The Penguins and defenseman Sergei Gonchar have put contract negotiations on hold.
The two sides disagree about the player's value.
Gonchar, who carries a $5 million cap hit this season, is heading for unrestricted free agency this coming summer.
Sundin Could Have Future As Executive
Mats Sundin isn't going to play in the NHL again, but his days in hockey might not be over.
Sundin, 38, announced his retirement prior to the start of the season.
"He is taking his time (contemplating his future)," Sundin's Sweden-based agent, Claes Elefalk, told the Ottawa Sun.
Avs Activate Foote, Hendricks; Place Cumiskey On IR, Waive Preissing
The Avalanche announced today that the team has activated defenseman Adam Foote and forward Matt Hendricks from the injured reserve list.
The Avalanche also announced today that the club has placed defenseman Kyle Cumiskey (foot) on IR (retroactive to Nov. 23) and placed defenseman Tom Preissing on waivers.
Coyotes Loan Viktor Tikhonov To KHL
Coyotes GM Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have loaned forward Viktor Tikhonov to KHL (Kontinental Hockey League) for the remainder of the 2009-10 season.
Tikhonov appeared in 18 games for the San Antonio Rampage (AHL) this season collecting 2-6-8 and 12 penalty minutes.
