Lightning Send Lundin To Norfolk, Recall Smaby

The Lightning have reassigned defenseman Mike Lundin to the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL, Executive Vice President and GM Brian Lawton announced today. Defenseman Matt Smaby was also recalled from his conditioning assignment.

Hurricanes May Be In Dump Mode

The Hurricanes, who made a deep run in the postseason last spring, are struggling mightily this year. Carolina has just 15 points, dead last in the NHL. The Ottawa Sun reports that Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford is already trying to unload some of the team's more expensive contracts. Guys like defenseman Aaron Ward ($2.5 million), Joe Corvo ($2.75 million) and Niclas Wallin ($1.725 million) are all being shopped.

However, the Ottawa Sun points out that he's unlikely to make the squad due to the presence of Flyers center Mike Richards. "They're basically the same player and they're likely going to take a guy like Richards ahead of Fisher," said a league executive.

Mats Sundin isn't going to play in the NHL again, but his days in hockey might not be over. Sundin, 38, announced his retirement prior to the start of the season. "He is taking his time (contemplating his future)," Sundin's Sweden-based agent, Claes Elefalk, told the Ottawa Sun.
