The Dallas Stars addressed what was arguably their biggest need Wednesday when they acquired defenseman Chris Tanev as part of a three-team trade with the Calgary Flames and the New Jersey Devils.

In total, the Stars received Tanev and the rights to University of Massachusetts prospect goaltender Cole Brady. The Flames, who will retain 50% of Tanev's salary, received prospect defenseman Artem Grushnikov from the Stars along with their 2024 second-round pick and a 2026 conditional third-round pick.

The Devils received the Stars' 2026 fourth-round pick for serving as a third-party broker that retained 50% of Tanev's salary.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said he doesn't think the Winnipeg Jets' attendance issues are a red flag for the team's viability.

"I don't view this as a crisis," said Bettman, who spoke alongside deputy commissioner Bill Daly on Tuesday before the Jets hosted the St. Louis Blues. "But I do believe, as with any team in any market, there needs to be collaboration between community and the fan base and the club.

"And I believe, ultimately, it will be here."

Valeri Nichushkin has been cleared to resume practicing with the Colorado Avalanche after receiving care from the player assistance program.

The NHL and NHL Players' Association announced Monday that Nichushkin has entered the follow-up care phase. He has not yet been cleared to resume playing in games.

The Chicago Blackhawks retired Chris Chelios' No. 7 jersey Sunday during a pregame ceremony that highlighted the defenseman's hard-charging lifestyle on and off the ice.

Prior to a 3-2 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings, Chelios, dressed in all black and surrounded by family, friends and former teammates, blew kisses to the cheering crowd after he was introduced. There were chants of "Cheli! Cheli!"

"The path, the journey, where we came from, where I came from, it's so hard to believe this is happening," Chelios said.

Patrick Kane returned to Chicago with the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday for his first game against the Blackhawks since he was traded to the New York Rangers a year ago. The 35-year-old winger, nicknamed Showtime for his flashy style, had 446 goals and 779 assists in 1,161 regular-season games with his first NHL team.

Just like he has so many times before, Kane delivered. He had a goal and an assist in Detroit's 3-2 victory, closing it out on a breakaway 1:43 into overtime. 

Just four games after making his season debut, Los Angeles Kings forward Viktor Arvidsson returned to long-term injured reserve Saturday.

Arvidsson will be sidelined with a lower-body injury after missing the first 50 games of the season following back surgery in October.

The Arizona Coyotes have put forward Adam Ruzicka on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract.

The move comes after Ruzicka posted to his Instagram stories a video of himself with a white powder appearing to be cocaine and a credit card on a counter.

The Coyotes announced Friday that Ruzicka was going on waivers for termination purposes and said they would have no further comment at this time.

After his New Jersey Devils were embarrassed by the rival New York Rangers at home on Thursday, star center Jack Hughes said his team needs an attitude adjustment as their playoff hopes dim.

"We've got to digest tonight and then we've got to wrap our heads around changing our attitude and really believing in ourselves," said Hughes, who scored the Devils' only goal in their 5-1 loss to the Rangers, who won their ninth straight game. "Not just talking and saying that, but actually doing that."

Washington Capitals right wing T.J. Oshie left with a noncontact injury in the third period of a 5-3 win at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night.

Oshie went down to the ice after making a move near the offensive blue line. He crawled along the boards to the bench and needed assistance back to the locker room.

Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said there is a "fairly high" level of concern about Oshie's injury.

Auston Matthews scored his 50th goal of the season Wednesday night in the Toronto Maple Leafs star's hometown return, becoming the fastest NHL player to reach that mark in 28 years.

Playing his 54th game of the season, Matthews scored 5:01 into the game on a power play to give Toronto a 2-0 lead over the Arizona Coyotes at Mullett Arena. He added his 51st -- giving him 350 career goals in 535 games -- late in the second period for a 4-2 lead.

The Maple Leafs went on to win 6-3.
