The Tempe City Council unanimously approved the Arizona Coyotes' arena and entertainment district proposal on Tuesday night, giving it emphatic support ahead of the May 16, 2023, voter referendum that will decide its fate.

The Coyotes are seeking to build a 16,000-seat arena and entertainment district on city-owned land at Rio Salado Parkway and Priest Drive, at the west end of Tempe Town Lake. 

Borje Salming, legendary NHL defenseman and trailblazer of European-born players in North America, has died. He was 71 years old and had been diagnosed with ALS earlier this year.

The Toronto Maple Leafs, for whom Salming played the bulk of his career, released a statement on Thursday to announce Salming's passing.

"The Toronto Maple Leafs mourn the loss of Börje Salming," said Leafs' President and Alternate Governor Brendan Shanahan. 

Peter McNab, the former NHL player and television color analyst for more than 25 years with the Colorado Avalanche, died on Sunday. He was 70.

McNab, who was the color analyst for the Avalanche since their inception in 1995, was diagnosed with cancer last year.
