Kings GM Confident About Doughty Deal
Kings general manager Dean Lombardi isn't worried about negotiations with young defenseman Drew Doughty on a new contract.
"This isn't a standoff like we've been seeing in Washington," Lombardi said jokingly. "I'm fairly confident that we'll be able to get this done."
Lombardi and Doughty's representatives have been in communication during the past few days in an effort to move the conversation toward a resolution.
"We've been talking," Lombardi said. "We’re trying to hammer it out, but I don't think I really have a handle on it yet."
Referendum Approaches On New Isles Arena
The residents of Nassau County will vote in a special election Aug. 1 on a $400 million referendum that would lead to construction of a new home for the New York Islanders.
If the referendum passes, it would be the first step toward the completion of a new arena for the Islanders to play in, as well as a minor-league baseball stadium nearby.
"Nervous I think is probably the best way to do it," Islanders owner Charles Wang said of his feelings about the election. "I think it is going to be a tight race. We believe we have something very special here. We want the people to go out there and vote -- and vote yes, obviously."
Kings File Grievance Over Fraser Injury
The Kings filed a formal grievance with the NHL over Colin Fraser's fitness on Friday, according to multiple media reports.
Los Angeles believes that Fraser's old team, the Oilers, misrepresented the extent of his ankle injury at the time of the trade, which sent Ryan Smyth back to Edmonton.
Fraser had surgery earlier this week to repair an unhealed ankle fracture and is out indefinitely, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The Oilers had said Fraser would be cleared to play in a few days.
The Kings aren't trying to void the trade and they are likely to waive Fraser anyway -- but they can't do it until he's healthy.
