Tavares, Hedman, Duchene Go In NHL's Top-3
The Islanders have selected London Knights center John Tavares with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 NHL entry draft, as reported by the Associated Press on Friday night.
The Islanders chose Tavares with the first overall pick ahead of Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman, the top-ranked European prospect.
The Lightnng took Hedman and the Avalanche followed with forward Matt Duchene, the first three selections going as expected.
Hedman: I'm An Impact Player
European defenseman Victor Hedman is vying with John Tavares to be the top overall pick, and made his own sales pitch on Thursday.
"I've been playing against men for two years now, playing over 20 minutes (per game)," Hedman told NHL.com on Thursday.
"I think of myself as an impact player, I can play in all kinds of situations. That's the biggest reason. I bring a winning mentality to the team. I do whatever it takes to win. I really hate to lose. I do whatever it takes -- if that means I have to fight someone, I'll do it. If it's a one-goal game, I want to play. If there's 10 minutes left, I want to play all 10 minutes. Just do whatever it takes to win."
Tavares: I Want To Win A Few Cups
John Tavares, who could be the first overall pick in this year's NHL Draft, wants to win a few Stanley Cups.
The Islanders have the first overall pick.
"I'm a passionate guy about what I do, and I love this game more than anything. I'm very determined and I'm looking for every possible way to get better and improve myself to be the best player I can be and to contribute in a big way. And not only to win one Stanley Cup, but I want to win a few. That's what I think I can contribute to any team," Tavares told NHL.com on Thursday.
