Team Staal picked up a victory in the SuperSkills event on Saturday night thanks to the play of Alex Ovechkin and Zdeno Chara. Ovechkin won his third straight breakaway challenge, while Chara broke his own 2-year-old record for the hardest shot. Players from the All-Star team Eric Staal put together won five of six events. "I thought we did pretty good" choosing the team, Staal said. "Obviously, we're going to see [Sunday] during the game, but tonight, it worked out with some good wins in some of the events." Team Staal also produced winners in the competitions for fastest skater (the Islanders' Michael Grabner), accuracy (Vancouver's Daniel Sedin) and the shootout (Anaheim's Corey Perry). Team Lidstrom's only victory came in the skills challenge relay.

Nicklas Lidstrom's first pick in the inaugural NHL All-Star fantasy draft was his only bad one, choosing the wrong side of a flipped puck with the No. 1 selection on the line. Eric Staal of the host Hurricanes quickly picked goalie Cam Ward, his teammate, first overall for Team Staal.

Avalanche forward Paul Stastny has been added to the 2011 NHL All-Star Game roster, the league announced Wednesday. He will join teammate Matt Duchene at the 58th NHL All-Star Game, which will be held this Sunday, January 30, at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C. Stastny, 25, will be making his first appearance at the NHL All-Star Game. He was selected to the 2008 All-Star Game but was unable to play due to injury.

Sidney Crosby will not attend the NHL's All-Star Game this weekend as he continues to recover from a concussion, the Penguins said. GM Ray Shero said Crosby is making progress in his recovery but is not yet symptom-free.

Flames captain Jarome Iginla has withdrawn from the NHL All-Star Game so he can spend time with his ailing grandmother. Flyers forward Danny Briere will replace Iginla in the lineup. Iginla, 33, has a goal and two assists in five All-Star games (2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009) and was named the Western Conference captain in 2008.

The NHL?s All-Star teams will be selected by Eric Staal and Nicklas Lidstrom, according to an Associated Press report. They have been appointed captains for the Jan. 30 game in Raleigh, North Carolina, and will lead teams carrying their names. Staal plays for the hometown Hurricanes. Lidstrom is the captain of the Red Wings and will be playing in his 12th All-Star game. The All-Stars were determined in a fan vote, and the players selected voted on the captains. The game features a revamped format this year.

The NHL announced Tuesday the remaining 36 players and 12 rookies chosen by the league's hockey operations department to take part in the All-Star festivities. Blackhawks forwards Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp were among the 36 announced. The Canucks, who own the NHL's best record, are sending forwards Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin and Ryan Kesler -- their three leading scorers. In a newly conceived format, the Eastern and Western conferences will not be pitted against each other. Instead, two captains will be picked, who will "draft" two teams to face off.

Sidney Crosby is the top vote-getter for this year's NHL All-Star Game. The NHL also announced Tuesday leading vote-getters Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury of the Penguins and Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith of the Blackhawks. The rest of the 42 All-Stars will be revealed on Jan. 11. They will nominate captains and alternates, who will then choose teams in a draft on Jan. 28.
