Jim Rutherford says there are some big decisions looming for the Vancouver Canucks, but the team's president of hockey operations has crossed one large task off his to-do list -- he hired Patrik Allvin as general manager.

Allvin became the 12th GM in franchise history on Wednesday. He had served as assistant GM for the Pittsburgh Penguins since November 2020.

Émilie Castonguay, a player agent, has been hired as an assistant general manager by the Vancouver Canucks, becoming only the second woman in NHL history to hold that title.

Castonguay, 38, is the first woman to serve as assistant GM in the franchise's history. She follows Angela Gorgone, who was promoted to assistant GM of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 1996, as the only women to be hired as assistant general managers in the NHL.

The Montreal Canadiens hired player agent Kent Hughes to a five-year deal as their general manager Tuesday, hoping he can turn around a team with the worst record in the NHL.

The 51-year-old Montreal native, who becomes the 18th general manager in franchise history, replaces Marc Bergevin, who was fired Nov. 28 following the Canadiens' poor start.

The Boston Bruins on Tuesday signed Tuukka Rask for the rest of the season, bringing back the winningest goalie in franchise history after he recovered from offseason hip surgery.

General manager Don Sweeney said Rask will back up Linus Ullmark for Wednesday night's game against the rival Montreal Canadiens.

Nicklas Lidstrom has been hired as vice president of hockey operations for the Detroit Red Wings, as another franchise legend joins their front office.

Lidstrom, 51, will be involved in all aspects of hockey operations for the Red Wings in his new role.

Former Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin joined the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday as a senior adviser.

Bergevin was fired by Montreal on Nov. 28, ending a 10-year run with the Canadiens.

"I've enjoyed my time away, but I'm excited to join the L.A. Kings and become an active part of helping the team reach its objectives," Bergevin said in a statement.

Tuukka Rask has signed a professional tryout contract with the AHL Providence Bruins, the first major step in the star goaltender's comeback with the Boston Bruins.

Rask, 34, is an unrestricted free agent who underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip in late July. He is expected to start for Providence on Friday at home against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. After his minor league conditioning stint, Rask is expected to sign a contract with Boston for his 15th NHL season.
