The Edmonton Oilers have re-signed defenseman Connor Murphy to a five-year contract with a $4.1 million cap hit, league sources confirmed to The Athletic.
Murphy, 33, was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks on March 2, just ahead of the trade deadline. His previous deal in Chicago carried a $4.4 million cap hit, making the new contract a modest pay reduction, though the five-year term represents a significant commitment given his age.
The signing carries added urgency for Edmonton, as defenseman Darnell Nurse has formally requested a trade out of the organization. The Oilers could not afford to lose Murphy on top of a potential Nurse departure.
Murphy was ranked No. 30 on The Athletic's unrestricted free agent rankings heading into the offseason.
The Oilers also locked up center Jason Dickinson on Sunday to a five-year extension at $4 million per year. Like Murphy, Dickinson was a pending unrestricted free agent acquired from Chicago before the trade deadline.
