Auston Matthews scored his 50th goal of the season Wednesday night in the Toronto Maple Leafs star's hometown return, becoming the fastest NHL player to reach that mark in 28 years.

Playing his 54th game of the season, Matthews scored 5:01 into the game on a power play to give Toronto a 2-0 lead over the Arizona Coyotes at Mullett Arena. He added his 51st -- giving him 350 career goals in 535 games -- late in the second period for a 4-2 lead.

The Maple Leafs went on to win 6-3.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly's five-game suspension on Tuesday for cross-checking Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig.

Rielly will not be eligible to play again until Toronto's game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly has been suspended five games by the NHL Department of Player Safety for a cross-check to the head of Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig on Saturday night.

Rielly hit Greig with his stick after the Senators rookie scored an empty-net goal on a slap shot from close distance with 5.1 seconds remaining.

Toronto Maple Leafs All-Star defenseman Morgan Rielly on Sunday accepted an offer for an in-person hearing with NHL Player Safety following his cross-check on Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig on Saturday night.

The league's safety department posted on social media that the hearing will be held Tuesday at the NHL's offices in New York. The Maple Leafs will host the St. Louis Blues later that night.
