The top stories from this week in hockey... The Ottawa Senators traded a first round pick and Dean McAmmond to the Islanders for Chris Campoli and Mike Comrie. This trade does not seem to make a lot of sense. Ottawa gives up a first round pick (Which is San Jose's, acquired in the Andrej Meszaros trade) for two mediocre role players? Do the Senators believe they have an opportunity to be a competitive playoff team; they are currently 15 points out of a playoff spot with just 24 games left. With the trade deadline just eight days away all eyes will be on Florida to see if they are willing to part ways with defenseman Jay Bouwmeester. The Panthers are currently in eighth place in the Eastern Conference and it may be hard to deal their star since the franchise has not made the playoffs since the turn of the century. Martin Brodeur is expected to play within the next week. Scott Clemmenssen, who played stellar in Brodeur's absence, is expected to return to the backup role. Man on Fire: Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk scored six goals and added three assists in four games last week. The New York Rangers replaced coach Tom Renney with John Tortorella on Monday. Tortorella, the 2003-04 Jack Adams Award winner, takes over a Rangers club which has won just two of its last 12 games. Stat line of the week: Flyers' forward Mike Richards scored two goals (one shorthanded) and added three assists on February 19th against Buffalo. Richards also had two penalty minutes and five shots on goal. Andrew Brunette's Iron Man streak ended at 509 games. The 36-year-old winger was forced to sit out on Saturday against the Red Wings due to a lower-body injury. It was the first game Brunette has missed since December 31st, 2001. Naughty, Naughty: Denis Gauthier of the Kings received a two-game suspension for boarding San Jose's Patrick Marleau from behind. This is Gauthier's second suspension this month. The rugged blueliner was handed a five-game suspension on February 2nd for hitting Montreal's Josh Gorges in the head. RealGM.com Top Ten Division I College Hockey Rankings 1. Notre Dame 2. Princeton Prospect Scouting Name: Jared Cowen Status: 2009 NHL Draft eligible, projected top 5 pick. Team/League: Spokane Chiefs (WHL) Position: D Analysis: Cowen is the poster boy of a shutdown defenseman. Cowen has great knowledge of the game which he demonstrates with his exceptional knack of positioning. Cowen needs some work in the offensive end, but has shown improvement and the ability to produce when called upon. Cowen has the skill set to be a workhorse defenseman in the NHL and could develop into productive scorer in given time. Game to watch this week --San Jose @ Detroit on Wednesday the 25th
