Hockey Canada announced today that Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan, center Matthew Lombardi and left wing Scottie Upshall will represent Team Canada at the 2009 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland, April 24 to May 10. Doan, 32, finished the 2008-09 season as the Coyotes? leading scorer for the fifth consecutive year with 73 points on a career-high 31 goals and 42 assists while appearing in all 82 games. He led the Coyotes in goals, assists, points, power play goals (10), shots (230) and tied for the team lead in game-winning goals (4). In addition, Doan joined Dale Hawerchuk and Keith Tkachuk as the only players in team history to record nine consecutive 20-goal seasons while also posting back-to-back 70-point campaigns for the first time in his career. A native of Halkirk, Alberta, Doan served as captain of Team Canada at both the 2008 and 2007 IIHF World Championship tournaments. Last year, he registered 2-4-6 in nine games while helping Canada to the silver medal. In 2007, he collected 5-5-10 in nine games to lead Canada to the gold medal. Doan has played for Team Canada six times in his career. In addition to winning the silver medal in last year?s World Championship and the gold medal in 2007, he also represented Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy and won a silver medal with Canada at the 2005 World Championship in Austria. In 2003, he helped lead Team Canada to a gold medal at the World Championship in Finland. He also represented Canada at the 1999 World Championship in Norway. Doan was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the first round (7th overall) of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He has played his entire career (13 seasons) with the Coyotes/Jets franchise and ranks 2nd in franchise history in games played (965) and 4th in goals (258), assists (365) and points (623). He is also the club?s all-time leader in game-winning goals (44). Lombardi, 27, tied his career-high with 46 points this season on 14 goals and 32 assists in 69 games. After beginning the year with Calgary, Lombardi was traded to the Coyotes with Brandon Prust and a conditional first round draft choice in exchange for Olli Jokinen on March 4, 2009. In 19 games with the Coyotes, Lombardi registered 5-11-16 and 14 penalty minutes (PIM) to rank 2nd on the Coyotes in scoring during that span. Lombardi, who was selected by Calgary in the 3rd round (90th overall) of the 2002 Entry Draft, has recorded 70-113-173 and 239 PIM in 366 career NHL games with the Coyotes and Flames. He has also appeared in 33 career playoff games, collecting 2-8-10. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Lombardi represented Canada at the 2007 World Championship where collected 6-6-12 in nine games while helping to lead the team to the gold medal. He ranked 3rd in goals and 4th in points among all scorers in the tournament. Lombardi also represented Canada at the 2002 Sweden Games. Upshall, 25, set new career-highs in goals (15), assists (19), points (34) and games played (74) this season. He began the season with Philadelphia before being traded to the Coyotes with a 2nd round draft choice in the 2011 Entry Draft for Daniel Carcillo on March 4, 2009. In 19 games with Phoenix, Upshall registered 8-5-13 and 26 PIM to rank 3rd on the Coyotes in scoring during that span. In 230 career NHL games with Nashville, Philadelphia and the Coyotes, Upshall, who was originally drafted by Nashville in the first round (6th overall) of the 2002 Entry Draft, has registered 46-60-106 and 223 PIM. The native of Fort McMurray, Alberta has represented Canada four times. In 2003, he captained Team Canada to the silver medal in the World Junior Championship and was named to the All-Tournament Team after collecting 4-1-5 in six games. He registered 3-3-6 in seven games at the 2002 World Junior Championship to help Canada to the silver medal. Upshall also played for Canada at the 1999 and 2001 Under-18 World Championship tournaments.
