New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with restricted free agent forward Fredrik Sjostrom. Sjostrom, 25, appeared in 69 games with the Phoenix Coyotes and Rangers this past season, registering 12 goals and nine assists for 21 points, along with 22 penalty minutes. He established a career-high in goals (12), including his first career hat trick on October 11 at Nashville, and collected a career-high, three assists on December 8 at Los Angeles. He also recorded three multiple-point games and posted a season-high, three game goal streak from December 15 to December 18, tallying four goals over the span. Sjostrom notched two goals in 18 contests with the Rangers, registering his first goal as a Blueshirt on March 2 vs. Philadelphia after making his Rangers? debut on February 28 at Carolina. In addition, Sjostrom skated in 10 post-season games with the Rangers, collecting one assist and two penalty minutes. He registered an assist in his playoff debut on April 9 at New Jersey. The 6-1, 217-pound forward has skated in 279 career NHL contests with the Phoenix Coyotes and Rangers, recording 34 goals and 41 assists for 75 points, along with 134 penalty minutes. In 2006-07, Sjostrom tied for seventh among all NHL forwards in blocked shots (68), and ranked third on the Coyotes in hits (94). He established career-highs in assists (17) and points (23) during the 2005-06 season. As a rookie in 2003-04, Sjostrom ranked second on the Coyotes among first-year players in games played (57), goals (seven), assists (six), points (13), and penalty minutes (22), and led team rookies in shots (73) and game-winning goals (one). He made his NHL debut on November 30, 2003 at Boston, and recorded his first NHL point with a goal on December 12, 2003 vs. Edmonton. The Fargelanda, Sweden native was originally Phoenix?s first round choice, 11th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. On February 26, he was acquired by the Rangers, along with David LeNeveu, Josh Gratton and a fifth round choice in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, in exchange for Al Montoya and Marcel Hossa.
