New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe will return for a third season behind the bench after new general manager Sunny Mehta completed a full organizational review following his arrival last month, the team confirmed Tuesday.
Goaltending coach Dave Rogalski was dismissed as part of the changes, while assistant Sergei Brylin is being reassigned within the organization. Mehta also declined to renew the contracts of front office executives Chuck Fletcher and Dan MacKinnon.
Keefe just finished his second season in New Jersey, which missed the playoffs after parting ways with longtime GM Tom Fitzgerald. The Devils reached the postseason in Keefe's first year but lost in the first round to Carolina without star center Jack Hughes, who was sidelined by shoulder surgery.
Mehta, who joined the Devils from the Florida Panthers, has moved quickly to reshape the organization while maintaining continuity at the head coaching position. He hired Braden Birch as an assistant general manager, reuniting with a colleague from their time together in Florida where both were part of back-to-back Stanley Cup championship teams.
