The top stories from this week in hockey... Eric Staal tied two franchise records Saturday night as the Carolina Hurricanes embarrassed the Tampa Bay lightning 9-2. Staal scored four goals and added two assists to help the Hurricanes maneuver up the standings into a playoff position. Staal became the first Hartford-Carolina player to score four goals in a game since Ron Francis accomplished the feat against the Edmonton Oilers on February 12th, 1984. It was the third time in franchise history that four goals have been scored by one player. Staal's six-point night was the fourth in franchise history and a personal best. The Columbus Blue Jackets clobbered the Detroit Red Wings 8-2 on Saturday night thanks to a hat trick by Rick Nash. It was the second time in a week that the Red Wings gave up eight goals in a loss. Maybe they should have acquired a goalie at the deadline. Newly acquired Mark Recchi helped the Boston Bruins dismantle the Chicago Blackhawks 5-3 on Saturday night. The veteran forward now has 15 goals and 32 assists on the season. Gordie Howe?s wife, Colleen, passed away Friday at the age of 76. Colleen and ?Mr. Hockey? were married for 56 years. The Pittsburgh Penguins have won six straight games, helping their chances of making the postseason. The Penguins have outscored their opponents 21-10 during their current streak. Welcome back Jordan Leopold: It did not take long for Jordan Leopold to feel at home again in Calgary. Leopold scored in his first game back with the Flames, the goal was just his seventh of the season. The Montreal Canadiens gave coach Guy Carbonneau his walking papers on Monday. General Manager Bob Gainey will replace Carbonneau as the bench boss for the remainder of the season. The Minnesota Sate High School Hockey Tournament returns this week to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. Over 120,000 spectators are expected to be in attendance for the four day event.
