Melrose stated that he hopes that the Lightning lose every game for the rest of the season. The Lightning responded to his comments by beating the Montreal Canadians 3-1 on Thursday night. Hats off to Petr Sykora: The Pittsburgh Penguins' forward recorded his first career hat trick last Thursday. Sykora?s 870 games without a three-goal-game was the longest streak in the NHL. Sykora has come close in the past, scoring two goals 38 times. The Washington Capitals website producer Brett Leonhardt dressed as the team?s emergency backup goalie on Friday night against the Ottawa Senators. The Capitals were forced to dress Leonhardt due to an injury to Jose Theodore during the team?s morning skate. The Capitals recalled Simeon Varlamov from Hershey, but he was unavailable at game time due to travel. The Capitals got permission from the league to carry three goalies for the day and subsequently signed Leonhardt, the former Division Three goaltender, to a one-day-contract. By the start of the third period, Leonhardt was back to his producer job in the press box after being replaced on the bench by the late arriving Varlamov. Chris Chelios became the oldest player in the history of the AHL. The 46-year-old defenseman spent two games playing for the Grand Rapids Griffins on a conditioning assignment.
