A week into the NHL's preseason, two names dominating the rumor mill in recent days apparently won't be on the move after all. Speculation was rampant heading into this week that Columbus Blue Jackets forward Nikolai Zherdev and Carolina Hurricanes prospect defenseman Jack Johnson might be shopped prior to the start of the upcoming 2006-07 season. Zherdev's contract negotiations with Jackets management had recently broken down, and with his agent requesting a trade for his client it was rumored Jackets GM Doug MacLean might shop the young forward to the highest bidder. Adding fuel to the fire was a recent shoulder injury suffered by Jackets center Sergei Fedorov in an exhibition match, sidelining him for at least the next four weeks. But according to MacLean, he has no intention of moving Zherdev, frequently denying reports this week to the contrary. MacLean's stated intent is to try to re-sign Zherdev before the season starts, but if failing to do so, will let him play this coming season in Russia and then try negotiations again next summer. Zherdev has signed a contract with a Russian team for the upcoming season and if he plays a single game there during the NHL season, he would have to pass through waivers before he could re-join the Jackets, making him all but ineligible to play with them this season. As for Johnson, Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford admitted last week he was willing to entertain offers for the talented youngster, but recently told TSN he hadn't received anything that would entice him into swinging a trade. Johnson's insistence on playing another season of college hockey at the University of Michigan rather than accepting an invitation to join the Hurricanes training camp has apparently upset Rutherford, forcing the 'Canes GM into exploring trade options.
