Defenseman Cole Hutson wasted little time establishing himself at the NHL level, scoring his first career goal and physically confronting New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes within his opening weeks after signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals.
The 19-year-old left Boston University following a second-round, 43rd-overall selection in 2024. He departed BU with 24 goals and 80 points across 74 games before Capitals general manager Chris Patrick determined the timing was right.
"All of that has earned him an opportunity to play in the National Hockey League," head coach Spencer Carbery said.
Hutson's debut included an empty-net power-play goal in a 4-1 victory over Ottawa, capping 16:24 of ice time with three shots on net. Veteran forward Tom Wilson noted the teenager carried an immediate presence at practice.
"He's got that swagger," Wilson said. "I think everybody on the ice could see that."
His arrival coincided with Washington's trade of longtime defenseman John Carlson to Anaheim after 17 seasons, which was a move that rattled the locker room. Hutson had anticipated learning from Carlson directly. Instead, Carlson texted him with encouragement and an open offer to provide guidance by phone.
Hutson leaned heavily on his brother Lane, a Calder Trophy-winning defenseman with the Montreal Canadiens, for counsel. The two spoke for roughly three hours after Cole signed.
"Just go play free, play confident," Lane advised.
Washington's youth movement now includes forwards Ryan Leonard and Connor McMichael alongside Hutson, with Carbery openly framing this group as the foundation of a post-Ovechkin era.
"There are some good young players that are going to be hopefully the next stars of the Washington Capitals for the next 15 years," Carbery said.
